I'm getting a bit concerned about my sons lately, tey are 27 y/o identical twins and although I've always noticed that they like sleeping, I attributed it to many things (before I was diagnosed). Because of what I've been going through at work and all I've recently learned I've been explaining to them what I've been experiencing physically and why my life has become so limited. I do realize that people w/o "N" can experience sleep paralysis, but both of them have shared with me that it happens to them quite often and has for some time. Prior to learning that I wasn't alone, I never even told my Dr.s because I thought there was something wrong with me. Luckily my one son is married (with children) and his wife, kids and dogs are usually around him when he is sleeping and needs to get up, but my other son told me that he will lay and wait hoping that his dog will kick him or walk over him.

Although its not effecting either of their lives (now), I don't know what to do or say to prepare them for what may eventually manifest into what both myself and my mother have gone through.

Does anyone else have a family history of this? Do you ever worry about passing it onto your children? Should I be worried that the sleep paralysis is a sign of things to come?

Yes, I think way to much but I'm still coming to terms with this and still accepting the fact that I'm not lazy or crazy (which is a big relief). It just hurts my heart to think that my children and/or grandchildren may experience what I'm going through.

" I am right with you. I was shocked when my son said he had sleep paralysis-I don't even have that...and yes, I know people get it who don't have N...but then I asked him about the mild cats I experience and he acknowledged that he gets them too...and he gets the weak knee thing in response to emotions...he dreams as soon as he sleeps and he can sleep anywhere...he had been living on one coke after another for years....and never had a good answer to why he was always dropping classes in college. I had my blood taken at the conference for the Stanford Study to see if I have the gene variation that is so common in N with C patients. Every time I have a bad day I think of Ryan. I try to hide my symptoms from his girlfriend because I don't want her to realize how serious it can be and bug out on him. Ryan's brother and his wife are expecting a baby girl next month...yes, I think about all of this, every day. "

" I BELEIVE THAT MY FATHER HAD N. HE NAPPED A LOT, AND SLEPT IN A VERY DEEP SLEEP. HE ALSO FAINTED AROUND MEDICAL THINGS, BLOOD.

I DID NOT KNOW I WAS THAT SICK UNTIL, MENAPOSE. I COULD NOT REGAIN MY ENERGY AFTER AROUND THE CLOCK FEEDING WITH MY ADOPTED SON. 5 YRS AND 4 SLEEP STUDIES LATER I HAVE N AND A BAD CASE OF RLS. "

" Yes, I never put it together until I saw the neurologist. I told him my symptoms and he said that you sound like a classic narcoleptic. He then asked me "Now does anyone else in your family have those problems." I told him no. He said "Well I see that your father died in a car accident at a very young age. Think it could have been N. I dug deeper asked all who knew him and I believe with all my heart he had it. How many normal people always pull off the road to sleep. I mean all the time.

Now I have 2 daughters. The oldest is like me as far as being able to sleepwalk. So I do wonder about her a lot. Is that the begining of the being able to drive while asleep. I don't know, but I worry. Her wanting to nap a lot. Is it the begining of what the kids call, the narcoleptic nod.

The younger one, has just started this month, not being able to sleep all night. I find her on the couch a lot. Scary dreams, she says. Is this the begining of the terrible narcoleptic insomnia, or maybe the start of the Hallucinations.

So young and fragile, how could they be faced with the same perils that I have had to go through.

Our only hope is the research. Dad never knew what hit him or shall I say what he hit (killed by running into a tractor trailer he was 26). Took 25 years to diagnose me. At least they know what to look for. "

" My biological father has it. His sister is seeing some signs and keeping an eye on it with my half-brother. HB and I both inherited a lot of yuck from bdad. "
