I have never had a full on cataplexy attack, but lately have been having symptoms that lead me to believe I may soon in the future. Its hard to explain but I will try. My muscles in my body will start to feel really weak and heavy and i get a feeling like im about to fall over. Im wondering if when you who have had attacks if its sudden and you dont feel it coming on, or if its instant? Is it different for each person who experiences it? Usually when i experience this, its when i have forgotten to take my cymbalta and its been 3 or 4 hours since i shouldve taken it. My doctor says that this medicine is probably treating my cataplexy before it even starts. I have been on anti depressants since i was in 6th grade so for about 14 years. I always have avoided laughing really hard or getting too emotional because it made me feel bad and weak in my muscles and i never could explain it or really thought about it or that it might be different than regular people. When my doctor asked me if i experience cataplexy when laughing, i told him i dont really laugh, and it made me realize im kinda avoiding it without realizing it. Im worried that since my narcolepsy has been getting worse, if I will start to experience cataplexy more.

Well, at the conference I learned that if your narcolepsy is narcolepsy with catalepsy , the catalepsy will usually start within 6 months of the EDS. However, in my case I took Prozac which I believe may have treated my cataplexy before it started. What i thought was my first C was about 10 years after the onset of chronic EDS. I had been off the prozac due to pregnancy.

all-- sometimes its parcels which can go into a full cat ....other times there is a warning that others can see and run to help before he goes down-the past year on rear occasion he knows and is able to give us warnings***** and the BIGGIE a sudden surprise down he goes....laughing usely does not trigger an attack... meds he was taking for depression* past treatment was hes depressed that's why hes having these problems.. that the Drs now still want him to take did nothing for the attacks... He can fall hard or gracefully in slow motion------Like a puppet thats had its strings cut--no where to go except down........

I've suffered cataplexy attacks for years. jolted by laughing, getting upset trying to disapline my son when he was younger. Sometimes I would just fall to the ground or sit to make it stop. It's horrible and I have never taken anything for it. I used to cover it up by saying I lost my balance. Very embarrassing I might ad. Does your medication help you and what is it called again that you take for your cataplexy?

The medicine I'm taking now is called cymbalta. I was put on it for my fibromyalgia, but my doctor says that may be preventing me from having worse cataplexy. When you have an attack, how long does it usually last?

why does a doctor think that only laughing causes cat attacks? Emotions dont cause mine to come on but will make them last longer and harder.
For me bright lights or flourescent lighting and fatigue cause mine. Also for the most part I can feel the attack coming on. Occasionaly it hits hard and fast but usually I have a little bit of time. Since I started taking adderall for the cataplexy my attacks are very infrequent. I used to have them every day and several times.....now I can go for 3 to 5 days with no attack.
