Does anyone else's meds make them ADD?

So I'm on ritalin and it's incredibly hard to concentrate. My mind flits from thing to thing and focusing on work (ie. school work) is horribly difficult. Ritalin is a stimulant and its prescribed to people with ADD or ADHD. No one really knows why it works for those people but it does. It's prescribed to narcoleptic people for its purpose, to stimulant so as to procure and maintain consciousness. For me, it also makes maintaining a train of thought quite a challenge.

Does anyone else (that's not ADD/ADHD) feel like their "A.D.D. meds" MAKE them A.D.D.? (I know I just threw a lot of repetitive acronyms at you, my apologies). I mean meds like ritalin (methylin), adderall, etc.

Is anyone on better meds that actually keep them awake but don't make them have the attention span of a goldfish (which I believe is around 30 seconds)?

Thanks so much for your help. College is rough.

" Yep that's me. They call me grasshopper. I have the attention span of a goldfish. It's ridicuolus and makes getting anything done very difficult. I'm out of options on the meds so it's take this or I'm completely useless. If you're studying it's a nightmare, trying to focus on anything is near impossible. I take dexadrine also which doesn't seem to make that much difference to concentration. I found modafinil just made feel totally weird, very disturbing. "

" I know it sounds strange that the same med is used for ADD and narcolepsy, but the reason ritalin is prescribed for ADD is that, although they are physically hyperactive, they have a problem focussing their brains and maintaining concentration, it is this that often manifests itself as disruptive behaviour particularly in school, so their brain needs to be stimulated to allow them to focus.

I take ritalin but am finding it difficult, doesn't seem to help me concentrate, makes me a bit edgy and disrupts my sleep at night. I think, but not certain, the dosage for ADD is higher than the dosage for narcolepsy. I asked the young lad up the road from me who has ADD and he said he thinks he takes 60mg at a time (I take 5mg) but i don't know how reliable his info is as he is given his ritalin by his mum. "

" i'm considering asking my doc if i can try Adderall, it seems to be getting good feedback on here. After persevering with modafinil a couple years and ritalin for a year, and they aren't doing me any good, i think it's time for a change. "
