Hi, my name is Cindy and I am 49 years old. I've read some of your posts and can hear the frustration in so many of you suffering with this health issue that I to am wondering if I have. (I wrote this today on the Dercums support group on my quest for answers).

Several years ago as in about 20 I started having very severe back pain and a physiatrist sent me to a p.t. who specialized in trigger points. She found them on the inside of my thighs but it did not make the pain in my lower back go away and I preceded to have a spinal fusion/laminectomy.

It took 3 or 4 years for the soft tissue to heal but I continued having lower back burning and spasm and once a year, same time in the spring my sacroiliac joint would go out on my right side and if anyone has had this happen you know its unbelievable pain. At the time I thought it was from the spinal fusion. After about 8 yrs post surgery I was given the correct diagnosis for that.

But, for some reason I started getting knots
in the S.I. (Sacro-illiac joint area) this is located in the upper central part of the buttocks. On each cheek. The knots I also have in the hips. Now, I'm finding them in my calves and knees.

When I am active these flair up and I can't walk unless they are deactivated. Ok, try and follow me here I'm getting to the punch line.

Last summer I had a electric spinal stimulator implant put in my back but ended up with a staff infection so it was explanted. I was laid up for 3 weeks with intrav.IV then I got the flu so I was about 5 weeks bed bound.

When I tried to get around I was very weak and hunched up like I was 79 not 49. So, I heard of a phys.therapist who did deep tissue massage and went to him about 25 times and though it hurt it did help me.

I have not gone since last december and I am noticing more knots some like marbles, others soft like fatty tissue. The I.T. bands (illotibial) that run down the sides of my thighs stay very clustered and I've even found knots in my abdomen. I also get alot in the trapizeus area and have problems with my scalenes.
Well, I guess you can see that I am very concerned b/c if I rub certain ones they hurt where others when rubbed give relief.

All this along with having high cholesterol.... managed with Crestor, but my trigclerides are at 300. Makes me wonder if these knots have something to do with the trigclercides.

My Internal med. doctor says they are just fatty tissue and blows it off. And, just wants me on another drug for trig.

Well, the last 3 weeks I have been eating unusually healthy determined to improve my diet but these lumps arent' going away. I tried working in the yard Tues. and couldn't even walk that evening.

I did some research on Lipoprotein Lipase Deficiency after reading a reply on the Fibromyagia board about missing enzymes and I read on a website that zolaft, diuretics, beta blockers, oral estrogen, alcohol can increase triglcyceride concentration. So, I am starting to feel like a cat chasing its tail. Especially, after talking to the dr. who prescribes the Zolaft.
I'm on 300 mg of this medicine and I am wondering if this is whats causing the trig. to go up and in turn I may have a lipase deficiency and lipase is what breaks down our fats and w/o it we store fat in lipomas. "Could this be where this fatty tissue is coming from but what about the trigger pts"?

Ok, to rap this up there seems to be two things going on. The trigger pts from most likely be out of shape that stem from my back issues or could have gotten worse b/c I've been on SSRI's for 20 years. Makes you wonder doesn't it? And, now the trigcleride problem.

I am hopeing some of you may have something in common with these symtoms. I wrote down Dr.Herbst name in San Diego but I do not think this is autoimmune. I have labs taken every 3 to 4 months b/c of Crestor and it would have shown something wouldn't it?

Sorry for such a long intro. but I thought I would do the full spill and just maybe this group will be helpful and I hope I have contributed also.

Thanks
Cindy

" One more important comment. I do not have HepC. A family member does and I have been under a great deal of stress for the last year while he was on treatment.
Also, 6 years ago was the same when he was on the first treatment.
I also have erratic sleep habits and feel like my hormones are out of wack b/c of the stress. I know I am low in cortisol.

Thanks
Cindy "

" It sounds like all of the trigger points you have there are some similiar with mine. If the pain is up and down the back near the SI joint and you are also having buttock pain, it sounds like the Quadratus Lumborum. It is a muscle below your 12th rib in the back, and if you lay on your side and hike up your hip you can find the crest of your hip the muscle is between there. I had Trps in the QL and it refers pain to the butt and hips and is near the SI joint. Do you have full ROM twisting your upper body or does that hurt? I would check that out. There are stretches you can do for the QL that can lengthen that muscle. YOu can have pain in your hips and buttocks from the quadratus lumborum trigger points.
If you also feel trigger points in your hip area, near te outside, it may be the gluteus minimus. The gluteus min muslce is a small fan like muscle with anterior and posterior fibers which could contain trigger points. The pain pattern for this muscle is in like a pseudo-sciatica distributiion with pain in your lower butt, going down your legs and to your ankles. There are stretches for these as well, but ask about your hip flexors, are they tight? If so, Trps could be from there causing a tightness in the hips and back, as they pull.
Last you mentioned trigger points in your calves. I have trigger points in my calves.. the 3 muscles that I have them in are the tibialis posterior, the gastroc ( belly of calf) and soleus( a deeper muscle) these refer pain to my heel ( the soleus) and the arch of my foot. As I mentioned, if you work with a trigger point specialist have them test those areas and also check ROM. Also you need a good daily stretching program. If it is under your knee, the popliteus, your several calf muscle connect under the knee, which would explain some tenderness there. hope that helps. "
