Iggy suggested I join this group and it about time I did. I have been in the dark about what to do about my myofascial pain. I also have fibromyalgia. I do however suffer from knots all the way down both sides of my neck. In my temples and head. Down into my chest. Also down into between my shoulders. I never been given any help with this except to be told to rub them out. I have realized that between my fibro, myofascial has become a really bit problem also. It started to hurt so much I can't ignore it anymore and try to say it just fibo pain because it not. The only thing I was given was lidocane patches but I haven't had those renewed in a while. I think I should. The deep spasming and burning and tearing feeling is making me want to scream today. My muscle relaxants and Tramadol do just so much and I can only take just so much. I am very afraid of what happens because these meds are not working very well any more. Unfortunately I have been on most everything they will give me. So I need to get relieve some how.

" Hello Stranded, welcome and sorry you are suffering so much. There's a trio of posts that have lots of really useful information about myofascial pain. If you start with 'overall best book to buy', also 'mps/cmp drs and research' and finally 'jessies threads for new ppl' you will find possibly more information than you will know what to do with, at first! But stick with them, there's so much good information.

Muscle knots in your neck can give so much grief, as well as more muscle knots across the top of your chest and shoulders. And they are treatable, it sounds like you'd benefit from seeing a trigger point therapist. The most successful from people talking here seem to be Bonnie Prudden or John Barnes.

And in the short term? Heat is very good, really soothing. "

" I live with a heating pad. I think I should try some books from the library first because I am getting so many book titles. Yes I would say my neck and head are the worst. Thanks for answering my posts. I take hot showers, my skin is so dry from it and I put so much mosturizer on. I will keep it up. "

" Welcome to the group, Stranded. Pumpkin gave you good advice in suggesting that you look over the posts for new people. She also brought up in another post that alternating between ibuprophen and tylenol can take the edge off. In the US, we usually use one or the other but studies have shown that they're more effective when used together.

I have fibro and MPS too. The MPS bothers me much more. Do you see a rhuemmy? Mine is resourceful in pointing me in the direction of getting care for my muscles.

I'd like to caution you about using heat properly. The general rule of thumb is 20 minutes on and 2 hours off. The muscles and nerves can get irritated with too much heat. I like Icy Hot patches because I find them soothing.

I hope you find some relief. "

" I have even found that ice packs are my best friends now, and practically sworn off heat.
A good TENS unit, along with proper instruction, can be a lifesaver at times. Also, check out getting a Theracane for helping yourself w knots, and I actually roll on a rubber ball for my hip pain!
Couple more ideas!
Good luck! "

" thanks every one again. I am just learning about what myofascial is. Never got much of a explaination. Trying to find out if insurance cover's release or not. Probably not. I have had tens units in physical therapy. Didn't work so well. I have an appoint with a neurologist next week. Do any of you feel like you have electrical sparks kind of like shocks in your neck. They hurt really bad though. I going to be doing some more reading. I have fibro also so I not sure what is fibro and what is myofascial sometimes. Well I know the knots. But I need to start doing my reasearch. "

" Welcome Stranded. I qualified to see both an occupational and physical therapist for myofascial release under my insurance plan. I hope your plan covers this too. Good luck on your search for the treatment that helps you find pain relief. Kat "
