I have another question

I had blood work done back in June and everything was wonderful and within normal limits. Does anyone know if this is hereditary? Or just something to perhaps keep my eye on from time to time with blood work so it can be caught early? Is there any research on this as to if it runs in families? I am not aware of anyone else on her side of the family having it. She has a 96 year old sister! It appears I have great genes on my moms side doesn't it? :-)

" Hi Suzie, I know it has been awhile since you posted this question but I thought I'd let you know what I have read since no one else has replied. There has been some speculation that it is inherited but no proof. There is more of a link to being exposed to chemicals (benzene)or radiation. My Dad is from a family of 10 children and no one else has it. He just turned 74 and was diagnosed a couple of years ago. His work involved equipment cleaning and overhauling and he worked as a mechanic both as a job and for personal use. He used a lot of WD-40 (contains benzene). He did well for quite some time with Aranesp shots although it never changed any of his blood counts. For the past several months, he has been getting blood transfusions. Usually only every six weeks but now he has caught a nasty cold and has an ear infection. He will be getting 3 units today. Hang in there and best of luck to you and your Mom. "

" Dear tmstoddard,
Sorry to hear your Father has an ear infection. I had the same problem in June and July, when I got an upper respiratory infection, followed by a sore throat, that then went to my ear, because the anti biotics given me were not strong enough, or soon enough. I then developed an abscess in my mastoid, and had to have an operation. This is the sort of problem common to AML sufferers, because our immune system is useless. However I am fine now, thjough deaf, because apparently I still have water in the mastoid, and the only cure is to put in a Gromit, to drain it. My Haematologist is not keen on the idea, as every operation brings with it the risk of further infection. So I am a problem to my wife, who never speaks up, and anyone I meet who tries to talk to my right ear. Can be useful of course, when I don't want to hear.!!!
Good Luck
Christopher. "

" Suzie, my Dr said MDS is not inherited, but I beg to differ. My father had it. I've told my siblings to watch their blood counts, as I'm the eldest by many years.

Come & join us on the New Member thread, which is pretty lively right now. "
