Mestinon + Levaquin

I posted about 2 weeks ago about Mestinon/antibiotic reactions. I was hospitalized with a misdiagnosis of diverticulitis, which my gastroenterologist discovered 2 days into my hospital stay.
I was put on high doses of IV Levaquin and Flagyl, among other things. I had two near-crises of my MG due to the Levaquin. Swallowing was non-existent, speech was unintelligible and I was having trouble breathing. Please be aware of possible reactions to strong antibiotics. I knew about "mycin" drugs but I must now list Levaquin as a drug allergy, which is a problem for me since it is a drug commonly prescribed for UTIs which I am prone to because of my MS. I was hospitalized for 12 days, part of which was in the rehab unit to make me strong enough to go home. ~Patti Posted on 11/01/09, 07:11 am |

I've heard about the bad problem with Levaquin from another MG site. Several antibiotics are on the precaution list on the main MG site on line.

I took Levaquin years before they found even one diagnosis for me and I got VERY sick. I cannot take it nor any other antibiotic around. Lupus leaves the sulfa out, the ones we can take I've had an allergic reaction to, and then there's the list that we can't have. I'm essentially screwed if I need an antibiotic or I will find out how well that colloid silver actually works. lol What I am doing for myself during this awful cold and flu season is taking a prenatal vitamin. It has all the goodies we need to ward off the illnesses and it comes in one convenient pill, plus it is much cheaper than an expensive multi-vitamin. Just a thought, my stepmother who is a nurse is who told me to take the prenatal vitamin and I"m glad she did. I hope you feel better very soon.

Frankly, thats how my MG kick-started. I had a periannal abcess and was put on strong antibiotics. Within couple of days, i noticed my eyesight going awry ... and the rest is history.
How i wish i could go back and change those 2 days - if i hadn't started on the antibiotics, i may still be `normal' today. I would give almsot anything for that.

Back in 1985 when I was diagnosed, goodness that sounds like eons ago...My doc from Chapel Hill gave me a list of drugs NOT to take. Each year, I get an updated list, and copies go to other docs, pharmacy, etc., and also keep one in my wallet with the medic alert information. When I was younger, I thought it was all silly, but now I understand better what terrible reactions I can have that can be life altering...be careful my friends!

Do you have any idea where I can get a copy of this list? Thanks. Sarah

After I had so much trouble in the hospital I went online and found these lists:
http://www.mginc.mb.ca/docs/MG_Dru... http://www.myastheniawa.info/drugs... I do know, however that I was given Dilaudid while I was there and had no trouble. Also, when I had surgery in August the anesthesia needed to be adjusted because of my Mestinon. I hope this helps. ~Patti
