Mestinon & Diarrhea

Hi

I understand that Mestinon causes diarrhea to some folks and I seem to be one of the unfortunate ones. I've had issues with my stools since April this year.

What i wanted to know was does this ease/improve after some time? That is, does the body get used to the pyridostigmine and do the bowel movements return to normal after a while, or is this a permanent side effect of this medication?

In my case, my Mestinon levels have remained constant for the past 3 months - approx 180 mg a day - but my bowel movements have not improved. Makes me unsure - is this due to mestinon or cud it be something else? I have no other issues - no pain, no cramps, fever etc. that are usually assoicated with diarrhea.

Appreciate your advise.

" I too have found that if I eat either before or right after I take it it's much better. It's kind of a catch 22; I need it in order to eat and I need to eat in order take it. Have you tried taking it with milk? That seems to work for me too, when I'm not able to chew very well. Good luck & I hope things get easier for you! -Taun "

" this is great. i actually stopped taking meds (mestinon) because i was told by my doctor that he meds doesn't reduce the level; it simply keeps my eyes from drooping. i had chronic cramping and diarrhea so i stop taking meds.
Am i to understand that the meds that you are takinge reduces your counts or myashenia gravis? "

" I don't pay attention to "counts", maybe I should but I think Mestinon treats symptoms. It helps me tremendously with my speech, chewing and swallowing problems. I have not had vision problems or a droopy eyelid for about three years. I rely on my Mestinon; I also take Cellcept. "

" I attribute the mestinon to causing my diarrhea and frequent urination (like every 30 min.!), esp. when I've used the Timespan. I went back to the 60 mg every three or four hours and the stomach problems lessened. I always take the pills with food, often using accompanying it with two ginger tablets or immodium to settle my stomach. Some days it's worse than others! "

" I dont think mestinon reduces the count of the antibodies in our bodies. In fact, my neuro likens it to a painkiller. Take it every 3-4 hours and it reduces the pain (read affect) of the antibodies. And he has told me that the count of these antibodies can vary from day to day - probably that's what causes our good and bad days.

I am on 30 mg of mestinon every 3 hrs (total 180 mg/day) and I try and take it along with some food, but my stomach is still in pretty bad shape. "
