Mestinon & Diarrhea

Hi

I understand that Mestinon causes diarrhea to some folks and I seem to be one of the unfortunate ones. I've had issues with my stools since April this year.

What i wanted to know was does this ease/improve after some time? That is, does the body get used to the pyridostigmine and do the bowel movements return to normal after a while, or is this a permanent side effect of this medication?

In my case, my Mestinon levels have remained constant for the past 3 months - approx 180 mg a day - but my bowel movements have not improved. Makes me unsure - is this due to mestinon or cud it be something else? I have no other issues - no pain, no cramps, fever etc. that are usually assoicated with diarrhea.

Appreciate your advise.

" This happened to me, too, although I had also increased my Cellcept at the same time I started Mestinon. I also had vomiting. These problems went away but it took MONTHS. I actually had to take potassium for a while because my level got so low due to these problems. This was about three years ago. I still take these meds and I am helped tremendously by them. Good luck to you. "

" My daughter's MG specialist, pediatric neurologist and gastroentrerologist (sp?) got together and recommended immodium AD and it really helped. My daughter also finds Zantac or Prilosec helps calm things down. Good luck. Sarah "

" Sarah

Was the immodium AD (loperamide) prescribed on a daily basis? I'm a bit apprehensive about taking this daily. What was the dosage? "

" I too had the same horrible side effect from Mestinon. Doc changed me to Mestinon Timespan and I am glad to say that I don't have the side effect with this type of Mestinon. "

" You all won't believe this but I have had chronic cramping diarrhea since 99 and when I went on mestinon, the problem went away. Now that they have taken me off of it for the single fiber EMB it's back with a vengeance. My body must be really screwed up. lol "

" RKK- The dosage was one pill 2x/day and she did take it every day for awhile. Now her pediatrician has her on calcium supplements, 500 mg/day and she sometimes has constipation from this so she no longer takes the immodium AD. Thanks. Sarah "

" Thanks Kimmer.

I've tried loperamides but they havent helped - and some docs hv told me not to take the same as it doesn't help those with MG.

A query - do you have any other symptoms along with your stomach condition? Cramps, fever, pain etc? I have nothing. "

" i used to have the stomach pains and diarrhea when i first started mestinon. I try to stay away from dairy so my stomach wont act up as much and it went away slowly but it does sometimes takes months.

have you ever tried to take it after you eat. for me if i dont eat anything it's worse than if i do. "
