How do myasthenics cope with alcohol and drinking?
Does anyone drink? Does it vary person to person? If one can drink, how much and how does it differ from when you didn't have MG? Is it even safe to mix it with all the medication? The more information/advice/thoughts, the better! Posted on 03/11/09, 01:03 am |

I read up on this for you most of the medications that I read on say that alcohol is okay in moderation. Just be sure to avoid drinks with tonic water or lemon as both contain quinine. I know people in my old support group that drank when they went out and never seemed to have problems. Most said they didn't have more than two or three. I would ask my doctor just to make sure. Hope this helps.

I drink alcohol, but I have noticed that since I have had MG, drinking makes the symptoms more noticeable. I sometimes get slurred speech or reduced facial expression and this is always worse when I drink. 2 drinks is really my limit, usually 1 if I am in public. And if I am particularly weak, say immediately after IVIG or on a bad day, I don't drink at all.
I think it's really important to learn your limits and make sure you feel safe. Maybe you could try having a drink at home and see what happens before trying any in public. And it's always helpful to have someone around who you can rely on if you get too weak.

update:
I had my first drink the other night. Actually, I had about three. Anyway, I was skeptical at first, but to my surprise, everything was totally fine. Nothing happened that was out of the ordinary. I do stay very hydrated throughout my days, and I did throughout the next day, I wonder if that has anything to do with the "good results." Just wanted to say that hope is not lost! Drinking can still be a small part of enjoying life, to those who like to of course.

I don't drink either. Number 1, I was never very good at it and number 2, once I was diagnosed with lupus, drinking even one drink had adverse effect..For me, it's sort of like being burned...When I look at alcohol, I don't want to touch it...
But everything in moderation...If it isn't hurting you to have a drink, then have one.
