Can MS mimic lung cancer?

My wife's brain MRI showed "multiple lesions", but the spinal MRI showed none. I think I understand that the lack of spinal lesions doesn't rule out MS, so our next move is likely a spinal tap.

The bigger problem now (I can't believe we are looking at a bigger problem than MS right now) is that the spinal MRI showed a potential mass on her liver. The doc sent us out for a ct scan and that screwed me up because they found a mass in the the lung and on the liver. So on to Pet Scan, and now I'm bonkers - a mass on liver, an infected lymph node and still the likely mass on the liver. Liver biopsy is in 2 days.

Question - a friend's brother has a severe case of MS. It appears that he also had a Pet Scan, and appearantly it lit up like a "christmas tree". She tells us that he found out that they were lesions likely caused by the MS. Could this be true?

" I have never heard of this but that doesn't make it not so. Rely on your doctors and don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion. Good luck. "

" Would you think our neurologist, pulmonary spec, or the radiologist would be my best bet? "

" I have never heard of this. I have heard of the Dr's doing tests (mri etc) & finding other things wrong not even related to what they were expecting.
I would definatelyl be relying on neuro & other specialist not radiologist as they are not the specialists.
Write down your questions for when you go back to any Dr & if worried phone them for help too.
I would try & relax & not stress about possibilities (easier said than done) until you get the answers, & remember this can take time.
keep us updated please "

" Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to speak with another neurologist tomorrow. Frankly, I'd like to speak with our current neurologist but he is on vacation through next Monday. Tomorrow morning is her biopsy and I know I'll see the Pulminary spec afterwards, too.

The stress is eating her up. Me too. "

" Biopsy today. Got to the hospital at 9:30 this morning and letf at 5:45pm. They had a hard time getting to the spot they needed to get to, and they had to jab her 6 times. Still, though, they aren't sure they got the tissue they wanted, but they did get her lung - she had a partial collapsed lung from that. Had 2 chest x-rays and sent us home finally. Have to go back for another x-ray tomorrow. "

" Tuesday's x-ray showed that her lung has collapsed a small amount further than yesterday, but her breathing isn't labored so they sent us home again with another x-ray today. They want to put her under next Thursday to biopsy her liver and her lung. If her lung doesn't get better or gets worse they said they could put a tube in then.

Radiology doc confirmed that MS lesions don't occur in the liver and lung. SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! I can't f_cking believe I was counting on MS to actually help her out of cancer. I'm an overeducated idiot. "

" We are bagging the Radiologist who attempted the biopsy. They provided no pain management, released her (after collapsing her lung) without a wheelchair to walk over 100 yards, wouldn't meet to update us after the xrays (we had to ask technicians for the updates), etc. Her MS acted up from the trauma. She has an appoint with a new Puliminologist at Georgetown Univ. Hospital this afternoon. He believes he can arrange a biopsy this week.

I've called in favors from family / friends with connections in the medical industry for advice / contacts. Have contacted qualified pathologists to eval the biopsies (AFIP - Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and pathologist at Columbia University), and am targeting Sloan Kettering as the hospital to manage treatment. Their appoints for the lung cancer unit are currently 4 weeks out after they get all your docs, but hope my contacts can get her in earlier on a cancelation. Seeking a treatment program from them that will be implimented either here in DC (Georgetown?), but willing to go to Baltimore (Hopkins) if necessary.

I think I have some heavy-weight influence now to get into MSKCC, but will take more intros and/or suggestions - does anyone out there have contacts or relationships senior people at Sloan Kettering or Johns Hopkins (Baltimore)? "
