Do you have Pets? Do they help you?

Guys, I have not seen much on this board about pets. Many of us have probably heard that having a pet is especially beneficial when ill. I have two cats. I love all animals, but dogs means walking, and so that is not an option. I have discovered having two cats is better than one. They can play with one another when I am not up to giving them attention. They have very different personalities. One is lovable and affectionate, the other is playful and frisky. Both have kept me sane. Anyone else have pets? Do they help you with the MS or other ailments? The only downside is cleaning the cat litter. Yet I discovered a great automatic cat litter box, but discovered it too late. It should really be started when the cats are kittens. It is called the "Litter Robot". It is different from other types of auto litter boxes. It looks like a big globe and rotates on its foundation to shift (must use clumping litter) debris each time the cat uses the box. It has sensors that indicate when a cat is in the box and when the cat has left. About 7 minutes after the cat has left the box, the Litter Robot starts is sifting rotation and deposits the clumps in a container located in the foundation. You just need to dump the bag out of the container (about every 2 to 3 days). There are limitations however. Not every cat will take to this mechanical thing. You may use it on manual and perform the sifting rotation whenever you like. This may prevent the cat from becoming afraid of it. Larger cats have difficulty with it. As I said, it is best to use when the cats are kittens. Only one of my cats will use the Robot. Even still, I am glad to have it. It is expensive, so this too is a limitation, yet think of all of the energy you can save. I would love to hear from others about the pets.

" I have a nasty cat...lol, and a pug, with a pug puppy coming any day now. My pug, Artie, is my constant companion, and he is so in tune to me that he knows things before I do.

He has slept curled around my head since he was a tiny puppy because of my seizures, and he will sit on my feet and bark if I start to have one while awake.

Pug Hugs xoxoxo Jen "

" I have an 11 old weenie dog. We've had her since she was 9 weeks. She really makes me laugh. She has a new, really big dog bed that we call the "ween" size bed. She loves to hve covers, and a lot of the time only about the last 2 inches of her snout is the only thing poking out! She has a greenies treat right after I have my copaxone each night. she starts demanding, about a half hour before it is time. The time change really messed her up over the weekend! "

" This is my first post ever!!!! Yea for me!!!LOLOL

I have a 6 year old Rat Terrier who is the absolute best dog I've ever had!!! He is very smart and is an excellent companion. When I have my 'I can't get out of bed days,' he's right in bed with me. When I have days where I can play with him, he's right there to play too. A very good boy he is!

I also have a 1 year old Boston Terrier. Or....a Boston TERROR as I like to refer to him as!!!! He's a brat!!!! But, he's adorable and makes me laugh!!!

I don't know if I could go without having a dog. I am alone for at least 8 hours a day, I can't drive anymore because of the MS and I live a few minutes out of town, so no family comes to see me. So...until my husband gets home from his work, I have the dogs to keep me company. I love them to pieces!!!! "

" We have had lots of pets at one time in the past-three dogs, two cats and litters of kittens all at one time. They have gone the way of the world and now, after many years, we are down to one awesome cat! Part of me would like to get another dog (small this time) but I want to start traveling while I can and having a pet complicates things especially if it is a dog. So, I think my dog days are over and when our cat dies that will be the end of having pets for me! "

" The first diagnosis I had was that there was an inoperable brain tumor in my brainstem and put on nasty oral steroids called decadron. The anxiety I felt was undescribable. If it wasn't for my black lab Newman, I think I would have gone mad. He laid with me EVERY night in my bed and I just petted him when I couldn't sleep. My cat Dexter was fantastic as well. He never once left my side when I was sick. Today, I know it is MS but thank God for those two. They helped me keep it together when I was living in sheer terror. "

" 4 cats (all orange, 2m, 2f), a dog (pug and chihauhau mix), and a cockatiel bird.

you know, i dont think they do much for me other than what they would do for anybody, but... they DO keep me physically active when it comes to taking care of them...

its a shame that i cant walk the dog anymore. i used to love walking through the neighborhood and meeting my neighbors.

my cats are 2 and 2. 2 good ones and 2 bad ones. the good ones can show love like nothing else i have ever encountered. but i love em all! just not particularly to fond of cleaning their friggin cat hair that gets everywhere!

as for the bird, i wont hesitate to say that i HATE it! hes mean, sprays poop through the bars of his cage onto everything, and somehow has the need to start tweeting at the first sign of sunrise every day... EVERY DAY! were talking before 6 am! what a jerk....

i think the animals play a HUGE role in keeping positive! and as we all know, thats the primary objective after true understanding and acceptance of this puzzling disease is acheived... "

" I have a cat Scotty. He's a little Garfield like furball and I love him dearly. He's between 15-18 yrs old. I got him about 12 years ago and he was fully grown. I have trouble imagining how I'd get through some things without his companionship. He helps me alot. "
