12 days ago I drove back home from visiting my parents. I had great visit, but my daughter and I wanted to get back home asap, so I drove four and a half hours before stopping for a pee break, then right back on the road for another hour and a half. Driving always makes me so sore that I soon regret my travels, I get hand cramps, feet cramps, leg cramps, you name it, and I always feel like hell for about a week.

Well... this trip was no exception. My hands and feet ached and I was exhausted, and I had the nastiest cramp ever in my right calf. Well I took my handy dandy Zanaflex, Norco and my other regular meds and everything started to improve... except that nasty cramp! The third day of this cramp in my calf coming and going was getting ridiculous, and I could no longer walk on my right leg because of it, so I decided "if it's here in the morning, I'm calling my doc!" Well, I woke up and it was worse than ever. So a quick call to my neuro was in order.

He called me back in about an hour and says "Sounds like a bad spasm, but I'm not going to treat it until you rule out a DVT." Huhhh??? What you talkin 'bout Willis?? I spent many, many years as a 911 paramedic, and this thing didn't come anywhere close to what I would even consider thinking of a DVT over. But, my neuro rocks and I told him I'd get it done asap. I called my PCP and he, without hesitation, told me to head to the ER and get it done now.

Well... that was a week ago today, and I was just released from the hospital today because of my brand new DVT! All the treatment seems to be on track and heading down the long road of the healing process. Let me tell ya... these things frickin' HURT!!!! I'm talking a screaming "just cut my leg off" pain!

So... the moral of the story? Just because you have MS and get used to having obscure aches and pains, don't be fooled that a new pain isn't something other than your MS, and not something potentially much, much worse in the short term than your MS could ever be. So keep your eyes open and listen to your body my friends. And never hesitate to call your doc!!

" It is deep vein thrombosis.....or a blood clot in the leg. I had a pulmonary embolysm about 5 years ago ,because my severe calf pain went undiagnosed, and the clot traveled to my lungs! I am very lucky and blessed to still be alive! God is good! "

" Wow... that is very lucky. I was totally convinced it was just more MS cramping pain at first. Should have realized faster there was a real problem when I could no longer walk because of it. "

" It's sort of scary. We assume everything is our MS. I got an ache in my side. Nothing terrible. I figured it was my MS hugging me. It turned out to be gall stones. "

" Thanks tons for sharing your story. I really hope you are feeling better and treating you DVT well, going forward. You and everyone are so right about not just assuming it is MS, whatever the symptom. I really relate to this story because I am a physician who had to stop practicing and now I am into photography. I have had similar episodes, including pain and numbness in my lower back, which I initially attributed to my MS. I am somewhat lucky in that I am close with a lot of the same physicians who treat me. The upshot is I had compression of my spinal cord from a lumbar disc protrusion. Surgery and a couple of months later, I was cured of my 'MS' problem. "

" How interesting MattK, I do photography now as well! Well not while I'm healing up, but that's where I make some side cash. I love it. Glad your back is better!! "
