Hey all! Sorry to bug everyone, but I've been searching online and can't find anything to match what's going on. Since I started the Avonex I've noticed a not-unpleasant but certainly strange change in my body odor. It's almost like rubber cement. very chemical. I'm worried it's my liver malfunctioning, but I get blood tests regularly that say I'm normal. What's the deal? Does anyone else experience this? I've always had a nice flowery smell before this, so it's a distinct change. my usual deoderant doesn't cover it at all. No one else really notices it, but I certainly do. makes me worry...am I being paranoid? help!

" I do not take the same drug, but certainly what you put in has to do with what comes out! I just wanted to tell you that as far as your liver goes, the blood tests are good, but also look for a yellowing to the whites of your eyes, and a sort of grayish ting(sp) to your skin. "

" I read someone posted that same thing a few years ago. So your not alone in what you are eperiencing. I never read anything about that change in B.O and she never posted anything about it after that one time that she noticed a change in her b.o when she started a med, I can't remember which med it was that was a few years ago.

The Tysabri patient medication guide lists the foloowing symptoms for liver damage:

Yellowing of the skine & eyes(jaundice)
nauseau
vomitting
unusual darkening of the urine
feeling tired or weak

Nothing about a change in b.o so that's not what's causing it....with MS I trust my senses a lot less than I did. Maybe your b.o hasn't changed maybe your sense of smell has? "

" I take Avonex but I've never noticed any change in the way I smell. I did notice a change in how some other things smelled and in my taste buds. The change I experienced lasted about six months, then went back to normal. Check to see if it's your own sense of smell or if you really do smell the way you describe by asking another to, um, smell you. Hopefully, you'll find a close female relative to do the task! "

" LOL well my husband gets closer to me than anyone and he claims to not notice any difference. Maybe you guys are right! I might be imagining this! If that's the case then it's certainly a relief... :D "

" Out of curiosity, have you considered whether it's not what you smell but how you are perceiving smell?

I know there's a term for it .. but of course now I can't think of it, and a quick Google search isn't turning it up. But I KNOW I've found it before. Phantom smells, or something like that. A lot of people complain about smelling something weird, like burning plastic or unpleasant body-related smells, even though they know their own hygiene is perfect.

Does anyone else know what I'm talking about? "

" hey hum--i am pretty sure ms affects some peoples sense of smell--if hubby says you smell the same --you p'bly do--i bet it's your sense of smell that has changed--not your body odor "

" Oh, I finally thought of the name of what I was trying to think of ... "phantosmia," which is "olfactory hallucination," or smelling odors that aren't there.

You can Google it, and there are suggestions that there are epilepsy related causes as well as medicine side effects and also possible M.S. complications.

Here's one link I found:

" I don't have MS, but a very sensitive sense of smell when PG. Just recently I kept smelling Betadine. I think that was it, but it seemed like I was around someone who had just had surgery or stitches. That smell. Since I had a csection (although 14yrs ago), and my son had surgery 11 mos ago, I know the smell. But, it is a hospital smell, certainly shouldn't be smelling it in my house (everywhere I went), and it got worse when I got into my van. After a day, it was gone, but it was certainly annoying and nauseating. So, I guess it shows that even "normal" ppl can get those things too, if I am "normal". LOL Kymberli "

" Hey! I have phantom smells as well. It sounds like this is what's happening. I didn't know what was going on until my neuro told me that this can be caused by major depression and also ms sensory problems. I have both. Since I had just had a major sensory relapse I imagine that was the cause! I know that it can be maddening! I started off by smelling gasoline! Everywhere! And then it was rotten meat. "Can't you SMELL that???", I would say! Not long ago it was sour kraut! Lol! I keep telling everyone that I don't know why it's never jasmine or honeysuckle! ;) I think that you're alright! :) I've found that Bacatrin (I'm not spelling that correctly) helps a little. Your pharmacist can give it to you to put on your nose. It's technically for sinus infections. I was reaching for anything and it just smelled like Vicks and gasoline, or tea tree oil and gasoline, which was of course worse! The bac has no smell but helps some. I don't know why. It should stop pretty soon! Very sorry that you're having them. Mail me if you ever want to talk! Take care! :) "

" Whew! well that's a relief then! I can deal with something just perceived, I was so worried my organs were failing or something! but I haven't noticed any change in coloring either to my skin or eyes. And I have been depressed lately...AND now that I think about it I've become really sensitive to cigarette smoke, which never bothered me in the least before I got really ill. Thanks guys! What a relief! "
