I work from home as a customer service agent for a popular satalite TV provider. The company that a actually work for is West at Home. The website is westathome.com. I've only been doing that for about 4 months now, but so far I love it. I love the flexibillity of choosing my own hours and working it around my son's schedule. I set up a routine for his nap and bed time and work while he is asleep.

There are several companies that hire for this type of work. Alpine Access, West, Live Ops, Arise, and more.... There are also a few good work at home job boards where you can get more information on each company and what kinds of work is involved. http://workplacelikehome.com and www.wahm.com are the two I like best.

Some companies hire you as an indipendent contractor and some as an employee. Some have startup costs and background check fees and some don't. You have to check out each one before you apply. I choose West because there were no startup costs and they hired me as an employee.

The wage depends on the line you work for. My base pay is $10 per hour and they offer bonuses all the time. Some lines pay minimum wage for your state and some more.

The only problem with West is that you don't choose your line, they just assign it to you. I got lucky.

Do you require any additional equipment to set
up work on your computer? Also can this be done in Canada or just the US?

Each company hires from different places so you would have to check each and find one that hires in Canada. I live in the US.

Each company's start up costs are different, but most required your own computer, a landline phone with no features, and a headset. It cost me about $50 to buy my phone and the headset I wanted. I already had a landline and I use my laptop.

allsunshine ~ you're very sweet to take the time for Q&A w/ us all ~ this would be the 1st X I've heard any legitimacy to a work-from-home claim, you can see why we're all over this ...

One last Q from me (I think) ~

* When you say landline w/ no features, would the ability to temporarily disable features be okay, IE: turn off Call Wtg before making outgoing calls?

Most of the work at home from your computer stuff is a scam. Ebay used to be a good source of supplementary income, but the economy has made that even difficult. I have been doing ebay of and on for 9 years, you really have to know the system to make any money, and selling new wholesale stuff is not one of them!

Janice - I just got a basic landline to use for work. I don't give the number to anyone because I don't want to get personal calls while I'm working. Your right that work at home jobs are hard to find! I don't want to loose the one I have over something stupid so I don't take a change that I would forget to turn the features off before work or end up getting a personal call during my shift.

Swilco & axfisherman - Yep, most of the work at home jobs are scams. It's hard to find legit income from home, but it does exist. Unfortunitly most of the jobs with no experience are going to be customer service phone work like I do. I would love to find a legit work at home job that is not phone work, but that is very rare with no experience.

Oh and another note for anyone that ends up applying at West. They have alot of tech issues! It drives me crazy at times. There are days I miss pay or end up spending quite a bit of unpaid time trying to get my systems up and running again. But, in the end I do think it's worth it. I've never had another job where I'm in control of my time and when I work. I bring home about $800 a month working part time. I know I could easily double that if I need to and put more time into it.

How about online surveys? Go on a clinical trial, free healthcare and $100 a visit.

Swilco - I have tried alot of the online survey companys, most are scams, and the ones that aren't pay you pennies per hour. It was not worth my time. I would never sign up for a clinical trial.... there is a reason it's a trial and if they give you money for it, there is a reason for that too. It's not a job or a reliable source of income.
