I just got something in the mail yesterday from my gynecologist's office saying i have yet to receive my Gardasil Vaccination..
I never put any thought into it but the letter got me thinking. My sister has HPV and so does my best friend. 90% of men are carriers (this is what i've read) and even though i'm only having sex with one person and my last pap smear 3 months ago came back normal it would still be nice to know i'm safe from SOME strains of HPV. Who know's what may happen in the future. I don't feel like going through the pain of having polyps frozen and cut off from the inside of my cervix like my sister did. Or the constant worry that any day it could turn into cancer. I'm going to see my neurologist tomorrow and was going to ask her if it would be safe for me given my MS and my being on Tysabri. It's sort of scary because i know the vaccination doesn't come without risks. Some women have died, some have developed Epstein Barr syndrome.. but then i have to remind myself that i am on Tysabri and that's just a tad bit more dangerous. :) Anyway, what do you all think? I know i'm not going to get much of a reaction out of this post because it's only for women 8-26 and most of you have missed that cut off. But what would you do if you had the chance or maybe your daughters were in this situation? Posted on 04/05/09, 03:04 pm |

I don't know about gardisil and how it affects any meds taken for MS. But I have two daughters (ages 16 and 20) and both felt it was worth taking it - this way, they can never say they didn't do all they could to prevent it. If the neuro says it's ok - I'd take it (but I'm 48 and long past that stage).
Hope this helps.

I am too old for this and have two boys.. I do however have neices and am the caseworker for several teen girls. I encourage all girls (young women) to take it. I see no difference between this and any other vaccination that can possibly save you from something bad in the future. If I had been told there was a vaccination for MS when I was younger I would have taken it, even though I had NO REASON to believe I would get it.
If the neuro says yes... go for it.

Talk with your neuro definately....I had a simple Tetnus/pertusis vaccine in 2007, and shortly afterward had a bad MS episode, and they aren't ruling out the vaccine being the cause of it. I will NEVER again have another vaccine...I am 38 though, so too old for this one anyway. My daughter is 13, and I think we are going to opt out, she can make the decision when she is older for herself. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I haven't heard many positive things about this immunization. The comments I've heard were either negative or just flat-out unsure. I'm too old for this, but I do have a daughter, who will be 9 in June. I'm not letting her get it until I hear more substantial stuff about it.

I just got back from my neurologist appointment and she said it wasn't worth it. That it would be too risky given my MS and nobody knows how it might interact with the Tysabri and that as long as i'm in a relationship with one person there should be no need to get it.
I agree.

Not all vaccines are safe. In some instances that can increases your chances of having a serious auto-immune condition. In many cases the pros outweigh the cons, but in your case maybe not. I think your neuro gave you the right advice.

Not a young woman, but I have read several studies/reports on this vaccine, and I'd have to agree with the last couple of posters (and coincidentally your Neuro). The safety and necessity of it for women, in good health (ie no complications like MS) is questionable at best. If I were a women (especially if I had MS too) I wouldn't get it!

ehh.. i've been wanting to get this vaccine also. I haven't asked the neuro about it.. probably wont either.. he's a complete ass. I'm married, and don't plan on being with anyone else, and as much as a believe it's going to last forever.. you never know what the future holds. If MSLifeLines.. the support group for rebif/pharmacy and my gyno say its okay i'm going to get it.
Cancer scares me.. even more than MS.

Hi I have only heard bad things about the vaccination. I saw a thing on Utube on a young girl who had the vaccination and how it made her so ill that she cant even function properly. it actually reminded me of MS she was so tired and had to take all these medications as she suffered from all these annoying problems. i would not let my daughter get it but thankfully i have a long time before i have to go there. over time your body can actually rid itself of some strains of HPV. so just because you have it doesnt mean you will always have it. but not many drs will tell you this. but i know two people who have had it and now they dont.
