I feel like it's a curse when with each step I take, I have to concentrate on NOT FALLING! Most of the time I touch something that will NOT move for stability.
I am blessed in that I CAN walk still! And that the Lord is always there even in the most simple yet dangerous things. Just sayin'.... :-) PS, Sometimes I come to the DS to hear myself talk!!! Thanks for joining in the comversation! Posted on 08/10/12, 10:50 am |

It's not a blessing or a curse. It is what it is. We all make adjustments. I don't park the car next to a curb because I need more space.
I occasionally use a hiking stick - not ready to admit quite yet that I may need a cane in the future. I've learned that when gardening or working outside, not to stoop with my back to the incline, because I'll fall over backwards. And if I do fall, it's a conscious effort to think about the position I'm in, what position I need to be in to get up, and what steps to get me there. I think that with most people it's automatic. With me, it requires thought. I make adjustments whenever I can so that I can remain independent.

I agree with Hummingbird. Always try to be aware of your surroundings. I have shrubs all in front of my sidewalk to my door...you should see them now, they have a perfect imprint, usually of my buttocks..lol I am getting better.
Isuggest if youdo get a cane, get a regular old cane, or walking stick. I have a 4 pronged cane and hate it. I trip on the cane itself, and it is cumbersome and heavy. Before I dare work outsid I always make sure if I am going to fall, I have it planned as to how I will get up.

I agree. its not a blessing or a curse, its an adjustment. So, you cant sprint across the room, but you can place the furniture so you can grab and walk using it. so, you can jog to get the mail, but you can take out a rollator and still check it for yourself. So, you cant drive the bus, but you can still catch it and get to where you are going.
I try to see the glass as half full. some days are harder than others, but for today, I choose the sunny side of the street.

diane812, I'm with you about the 4 post cane. Had one, donated for all the reasons you'd stated.
The "Hurricane" is pretty good, but not saying this as an advertisment. It's one of those as seen on tv jobbers. It HAS been helpful.

Hi Amy,
I'm the same way. Each step is a struggle to keep my balance. The walls of my house are so dirty from my hand-prints keeping me balanced. Is MS a curse? Are you blessed because you can still walk? Yes, I believe sometimes that I've been punished for some indiscretions when I was younger by getting MS. However, I know that God doesn't work that way, so I push it out of my mind. Am I blessed? Yes, compared to others, I'm in pretty good shape at the moment. Remember what you said, "the Lord is always there even in the most simple yet dangerous things." You always have some profound conversations! Thanks for the post!

I think it is a curse that the heat beats my ass so bad that I can't be outside. I love being outside, doing anything.
But its a blessing that I have my family, I am able to walk and still have my house Jimmy

Amen Jimmy, amen! There are so so many people out there with illnesses that can't see the blessings they still have.
