cancer in families

This has been a quiet group for the past few days. I hope everyone's okay and just busy with other things or out having fun. I just found out recently that my cousin was diagnosed with cancer in her liver and a little bit in her pancreas. They caught it early, though, so they're talking real optimistic. It seemed like for years that there wasn't any cancer in my family. I even used to think that maybe we were one of those lucky families that was spared that trial. But in the past five years we've seen some cases springing up. And its all different kinds of cancer. Makes you wonder why all of the sudden its happening now. I guess I'll just keep my head to the sky and take things one day at a time.

" I know exactly what you mean, Rich. We had had no cancer in our family for 50 years when my mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2010 and lived only 10 months with it. And I had had that exact same thought, that maybe our family would somehow escape. Now I'm trying to be be so nervous about it. As one of my grief books says, you can't really control how long you live, but you can control how *wide* you live - I thought that was such a good point. Wishing you all the best. "

" When I was diagnosed in 2010 I remember my doctor telling me that he had seen an increase in MM cases in this area recently. Makes you wonder what's causing it. Something toxic in the water? Or maybe something we're eating that we shouldn't be. Who knows. I used to be a smoker, and I asked him if that could be a factor, but he said that smoking has nothing to do with this kind of cancer. But I quit anyway. "
