well we went to the drs today to find out if Dave was ready for the transplant.. it turns out he is not.. the dr wants his M-Spike down to zero or real close..he's at 0.6 now..so he will have another cycle of the chemo..he had the 4 cycles of chemo and in the beginning that's all they said he needed to do before the transplant..but it didnt work out .. very upset and disappointed.. Dave and I both can't wait to get it over with but I understand why they want the numbers down to zero..they are sending the info to the transplant dr to see if he agrees with one more cyle... hopefully that will be the last one..all I have done since is cry...

" I'm in same boat after 6 rounds, my protein levels still too high. So I'm 1/2 way through #7 and drinking more water than before. "

" Don't be dissappointed, you or Dave. It's better to do it right which is giving Dave the best possible chance of success.

I was told they wanted a 0 m-spike and 10% or less plasma cell count.
After a year of chemo m-spike was .3 and plasma count of 20%.

The doc's decided to go ahead with the transplant at that point (Nov 2012) It took to the end of May to get to 0 m-spike.

This disease is a marathon, but I wish it were a sprint!

All the best and keep the faith

" The lower your paraproteins are going into the collection of stem cells the better your chances are of having the longest period without disease progression.

7 rounds of Velcade/Dex gave me about 32 months without progression. "

" Hang in there, you will eventually get there. I was initially to start SCT in jan/feb, well didn't happen till June. But no issues, I was in remission for 2-3 months before. Just want it right and go with the flow. "

" Hmmm that is so curious if your m spike was zero and amount of plasma cells low why would you put yourself through a transplant...you are in stringent remission. My husband has had the tandem he just finished his 2nd one came out of the hospital on june 5... his m spike going in was .5 and i have read others who have done their transplant usually if it is below .9 they do them....just my thoughts...the goal is to get to zero with the transplant if you are already there why bother. :) wishing much helath and happiness.

" Hi Tammy.. the dr said that they do some that are at his level..however the less cancer in the blood the better chance the transplant works.. he less cancer cells that have to be frozen..the less chance of putting back some with cancer.. the transplant gives you a better chance of staying in remission longer.. even if your in remission prior to it chances are that you will come out of it quicker and have to continue with treatment..my husband wants to get it all over with and not have to worry about treatments...everyone has their own way of dealing with it I guess..Hey bamboo..help me out here "

" The transplant allowed me 32 months without chemo before the disease progressed.
Maintainance chemo was an option instead of the transplant.
Both approaches are valid and circumstances may help decide.
In my case it was believed that the transplant provided the better outcome long term. "
