No one ever seems to talk much about the pain associated with this disease and how you treat it. Since one of my first symptoms was a patholigical fracture I understand pain very well. Opiates help ! Many days I blessed the creator of oxycodone, vicodin for the relief it brought. But here's the problem, I want to get off them. But when I try 2 things happen.
One I am physically addicted, Withdrawl symptoms are the horrible and I have only been able to stand them for a few hours. If I try to "titrate down" I am basically consigning myself to a day in bed. The seond thing thaqt happens is my bone pain and PN get worse. Not the 10 pain that I had with my fracture but solid 5 to 7. I am in some sort of remission although the jury is still out on my last PET scan. My blood numbers are still good but my red and white count still hover at the extreme low end of normal. The question for the group is: Has anyone successfully went through opiate detox and found ways to deal with the residual MM discomfort? If so "how"?

" So sorry to hear this, with the mm itself you have to add an addiction. Doesn't sound fair, but perfectly understandable. Is this not something your medical team can help with? You must not be alone in finding yourself addicted to the pain medication.

Ken tolerates pain well and takes hydrocodon sparingly. This is something all treating need to be made aware of, the possibility of developing an addiction to the pain meds. Thank you for sharing, Chuck.

" I think you might benefit more from the time release properties of oxycontin than the fast hit and run of oxycodone. Vicodin is too loaded up with liver damaging tylenol to be of much use long term.
There are organs you want to keep in the fight longer without damaging them on over the counter meds.
Sure withdrawl is unpleasant, but enough meds to keep the body in motion is not so bad an idea. The trick as I see things is that pain meds are to take the hard edge off, if you try to make all the pain go away you are more likely to go away first.
Addiction is a behavioral problem. "

" There is big difference between dependency and addiction. Perhaps understanding the difference is the place to begin your search. Persons that need pain relief to have some semblence of quality of life are not purposely becoming addicts. Bodies in pain become dependent, just as those bodies are dependent on water, food and shelter. Its too bad that society makes it out as such a bad thing. Having a relief from the horrors of this horrible desease should be a right. And yes you have the right to choose..... lets all give each other kindness as we travel down this road....... peace, no wrong intentions, i wish you all peace. "

" the reason my husband went to the er in the first place was because of painful ribs..which he ended up having over 20 fractures in that area..fracture in he pelvic area..his hip & shouder and 2 compression fractures of the spind..so he was in extreme pain.. he started out with the oxycodone and was still in pain.. they put him on a morphine patch and he has been ok with that so far,, he can still take the pain meds if needed too..I dint know if hes addicted ..all I know is it has eased his pain and thats all that matters for right now..good luck to you "
