Advice:
How long does my mum have?

My mum was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma 9 years ago. She has participated in several clinical trials which have worked very well. Now however there are no more drugs available for her that she hasn't already tried. She doesn't want any more chemo or steroids.

Her body has become drug resilient, the four weekly blood transfusions are no longer working, her para protein levels are higher now than when she was doanosed. She is in a lot of pain, several areas of bone destruction and very tired.

I think sadly this is the begining of the end now. Do these sound like symptoms of someone who hasn't got long to live? And how do I deal with this? I am 32 and my mum is 63.

Thank you.

" I don't have the answer to your question, perhaps Dr Orange could give you a better indication? Are you able to send her a message? Really sorry you're going through this.

" I know you are struggling for answers, but there really are none. It sounds is if you mom is a true fighter, and there is no way of knowing what is "right around the corner" in the MM world. I can understand your mom being tired however I feel the best thing you can do is support her with love, humor and is there a creative art she loves or is interested in? Taking her mind off the pain along with pain meds may help her continue the positive attitude she has had all these many years. I am just 3 weeks out from a BMT and 9 years is a dream for me to aspire to, so I thank you for writing that. Read my journey at www.janscancerjourney.blogspot.com. Your mom is in my prayers. "

" I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. My Mom was diagnosed with MM on March 26, 2008 and she passed away on March 28, 2009, just 1 year & 2 days after being diagnosed. She never responded to any chemos, she tried 3 of them.
I am so glad that you have had 9 years with your Mom. Just love your Mom & spend as much time as you can with her. You both will be in my prayers.

Kathleen "

" Hello Kathleen,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. Sadly my mum passed away shortly after I posted on the 15th July 2008. The year anniversary is coming up and still can't believe it.

Take care, Nici x "

" These physical bodies of ours are but borrowed robes, those of us with myeloma have some moths. As long as you Mom lives on in your heart, has what is really her gone anywhere?
The current state of affairs with myeloma is that each treatment, each rescue, inevitably fails and so we must come to terms with mortality and accept that there is an end to life in this form. "
