Thought this would be helpful for those who are taking avonex:

The Avonex helpline called me a couple months ago asking if I would like a nurse visit to help minimize my side effects. I hesitated but then agreed. Here's a routine that was provided to me and helped minimize my side effects so I thought I would share. Please check with you doctor first as well before changing anything.

Here's my routine that works for me...

Always drink lots of water

6 p.m. Take two regular strength Tylenol two hours before my shot

6 p.m. -- At that same time take my avonex out of the refrigerator so it has a chance to get to room temperature. I was advised two hours out of the fridge--please check with your doctor. Doing this seemed to help minimize the aches and pains.

8 p.m.-- take shot, make sure I give myself enough time and try not to rush, Keeping in mind that I am doing this to keep MS at bay

10 p.m.-- take two extra strength tylenol.

I was recommended to take two regular strength tylenol every four hours after, so around 2 a.m. take regular strength tylenol etc., but I usually don't wake up until 6 since the side effects have been minimized

Other helpful info:
Take Montrin instead so I don't feel like I am taking meds all day long, I was instructed 4 in the morning and than 8 hours later another 4 but please check with your doctor

Always have support groups to turn to

Avonex helpline 800.456.2255

I wish all of you the best of luck.

" Thanks.......

I have had very few side effects since I started Avonex about 6 months ago. My doctor gave me Naproxyn (presciption Aleeve) to take about 1-2 hours before the shot and then you only have to take it every 12 hours afterward. "
