BioWorld Today May 2004
"Fampridine-SR is believed to restore function by pharmacologically compensating for myelin loss in some axons, the Mayo monoclonals might actually replace the lost myelin – helping MS patients do even better." "102 blood donors with abnormal antibodies cranked out in large numbers by the misdirected B cells. Patients had various blood dyscrasias, including lymphomas, myelomas and something called “macroglobulinemia of uncertain significance,” but it didn’t really matter which they had, since all led to the same disorder: an abundance of IgM, the heaviest hitter of the body’s 10 immunoglobulins." "Mayo’s scientists infected mice with a toxic virus – Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis – that demyelinated the animals’ axons, leading to the paralysis common in MS, thereby providing a more precise mimic of that disease. Then they cut loose the monoclonals. Result: Mice rebuilt myelin in their spinal cords, but showed no change in MS scores and they remained paralyzed. Researchers gave treatment late in the disease, figuring results might be easier to notice. Had the virus not reached chronic stage when the drug was given, they surmised, outcomes might have been better. They were right. Since the first Mayo work, investigators have shown “you can get even more re-myelination if you treat [the mice] early,” Blight told BioWorld Today. And the results seem more real than those gained in the past" http://www.bioworld.com/servlet/co... Posted on 05/03/08, 09:31 pm |

Fampridine does not work to remyelinate. Fampridine acts like a band-aide on our lesions. It helps to let electrical current function more normally. Thus, it is not only a motor enhancer but it simultaneously allows many (if not all) of our MS symptoms to be alleviated.
The second phase III trial was over months ago. All trials had VERY promising results. All trials successfully demonstrated that the drug works, it works FAST and it is SAFE. Acorda is working very hard to quickly get all it's ducks in a row and submit a NDA (new drug application) to the FDA. THAT COULD HAPPEN LITERALLY ANY MINUTE. Fampridine has ORPHAN drug status. It will be a priority review. It should be on the market in th first half of 2009. Fampridine-SR is a sustained-release tablet formulation of the investigational drug 4-aminopyridine or 4-AP. There is a sustained release formulation of 4-aminopyridine, which your doctor CAN write an Rx for, although it will have to be filled by a compounding pharmacy. I have recently received a script for it and as soon as I can get it filled I'm going to start this new drug. (I am also on Tysabri and will continue with that. The drugs serve different purposes.) The testimonials I've read from people taking SR 4-AP have been very promising. I can't wait to try it

The above info is a QUOTE"" for an article. Hae seen since how it works with the potassium-sodium(K, Na) pump. It works by reducing potassium(K) and thus helping to allow impulses through the damaged nerve. I actually was talking to a "Holly" on another site yesterday about this. She said she was already low on potassium and I said Oh then you do NOT want to be on this stuff because if your potassium gets tooo low well then you have heart issues. Her reply..funny yousay that since I have problems with my heart beating properly.
So obviously would would want to make sure your sodium, potassium and aldosterone(made in adrenal cortex, it regulates Na & K) are all at normal levels before your doc puts you on this med. It does look pretty cool though ( :
