8+ weeks of mono

Just wanted to post & vent some of this frustration with the people who can understand. I'm a 38 year old male, and have been dealing with mono for the past 8 weeks, and it has been awful.

At first it was headaches and fever, the doc thought it was a sinus infection so she gave me amoxicillin. Of course, I soon after had the terrible rash reaction. I then got the blood test and found out I had mono.

I've dealt with fatigue on a daily basis, along with pain in my spleen that seems to come and go week by week. I've been through 2 rounds of steroids, but they didn't seem to do much other than keep my appetite while I was on them. Otherwise I go through spells of not wanting to eat, and I've lost about 10lbs so far, and I was already thin to begin with because I was very active before I got sick.

It has been very draining on me emotionally, physically and spiritually, and no one really seems to understand how hard it is. My doc gave me anxiety meds and wanted to put me on depression meds --- I took Lexapro for a few days and the side effects totally destroyed me --- nausea and extra fatigue that I didn't need on top of how I was already feeling.

Anyway, I have three kids and it has been killing me that I can't be active with them. They look at me pitifully and ask if I'm feeling any better. I keep thinking it will get better and it never does.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but I just needed to share.

BTW --- I bought some coconut oil today, just because I'm desperate for SOMETHING to work for me.

" I feel your pain. I am going on week 7 and suffering mostly with fatigue in limbs as well as a foggy head and upset stomach for most of the days. I am on alot of vitamins, Valtrex, coconut oil pills and Accupuncture. I have been drinking a ton of water, eating healthy with plenty of protein and I have been resting with no exercise. I don't get it as I feel like I am doing everything posible to heal quicker. It makes me so paranoid that something else is wrong with me as I have never suffered through something like this. The Dr. assures me that it takes time. I know your frustration but hang in there and be positive so you can get back to being a dad. Would love to hear how much progress you have made since this post. Dan "

" Hi Dan,

I'm still fighting it. For some reason, my spleen has been bothering me this week more than usual. The doctor did another round of blood tests to make sure that nothing else was going on, and they came back negative. Supposed to go in for an appointment to talk over the results tomorrow.

I am still getting fatigue and just generally feeling bad. It is hard to stay positive, but I'm trying. "

" Sorry to hear this Mark. Have you had an ultra sound on your organs? I would also statt accupuncture as this seems to give me push. They can also give you some herbs to help with the healing of the spleen. I would also try taking Milk Thistle which helps with the Liver. Understand that you are not alone in this and that you will soon beat this. Depression and anxiety will only make the healing process longer. Hang in there buddy and fight it!! "

" I have , like you, been at my wits end with my daughter's mono this past few weeks. I've been looking for anything that can help and have come up with very little even though I am an advanced practice nurse. A friend tried (out of desperation) an "immune support complex" vitamin when her son's mono had dragged out for a long time and she said it helped. We didn't have a brand name to go by so my husband just asked the guy at the vitamin store if they had something in that category. I bought it for my daughter and she improved enough in 24 hours to return to school. She was terribly sick the day before. Could have been coincidence but who knows... "
