Discussion:
Test suggestions after 2nd miscarriage

Hi everyone. I had my second miscarriage and am going into the doctor today for a follow-up ultra sound and to discuss possible tests. My previous doctor didn't want to do tests until the third miscarriage but I think this doctor is open to doing what I want and what I'm comfortable with. Do any of you have suggestions for what I should ask about testing? I know thyroid panel and maybe a hormone test after I ovulate next, but what tests have you found helpful and which ones maybe not so much at this point? Thanks for your help!

" I was in the same boat as you. After my second miscarriage, I insisted that the doctor start doing testing. So, what they'll probably do is what's called the 'Recurrent Miscarriage Labs' which tests for everything from bloodclotting disorders to hormonal probs to chromosomal analysis (they drew 14 viles of blood)! I thought 'surely this will tell me why i'm miscarrying.' Well, everything came back normal. The next month, my husband and I got pregnant again, miscarried, went to a new specialist and had more testing done (kind of a more in depth recurrent miscarriage workup). Those all came back normal too. I am so frustrated, but at the same time, it gives me peace of mind to rule out so many things. As a precaution, I'm on progesterone suppositories and an Estrogen patch in order to ramp up my hormones during the luteal phase because all 3 of my mc's never made it past 6 or 7 wks--my hormones never increased to support a viable pregnancy. Also, I hate to say it, but what I have found in my personal experience with dealing with my first 2 mc's with my OB's is that they are rather ignorant on the topic of mc's. They are so hyperfocused on caring for women who are already pregnant, that alot of them aren't versed in what to do if your pregnancies continue to fail. So, if your Dr. can't recommend the right tests (you shouldn't have to guess what you need), then maybe a specialist would make you feel more at ease--they usually 'get' the situation we are in alot more. I pray that you find some answers. Be patient. It will happen. :) "

" Thank you so much for this reply. It's just what I needed to hear, and it helps that someone has been in the same boat. I just got back from my doctor and she says she doesn't recommend testing but that I can do it if I want to in two weeks. I did get my blood drawn to rule out a thyroid problem since I'm a bit worried about a that. I also asked about progesterone and received a prescription from her to start taking after I ovulate, although she didn't recommend that either. It was a little tense when I told her I still wanted it, because I don't think my hormone levels went up either. Both of mine were also before 7 weeks. It's just so frustrating when they keep saying how normal it is to miscarry, and also that there is nothing you can really do to prevent it. It seems like it could just be so many things and you are right - they do care more about women who are already pregnant. Hopefully we will both be in that group soon. Best of luck to you, and thanks for sharing your story! "

" I had 3 mc in 8 months last year, all very early. Finally in November, they did the labs for 5 different tests, thyroid, chromosome, clotting and 2 more. All came back normal, including the thyroid. What i didnt realize is that my thyroid was at 4.11, and said it was in a normal range. My OB told me it was high. When pregnant, or ttc, my OB likes the thyroid levels to be in between .5 and 2.5, making mine extremely high. I started medication, and i am now 17 weeks pregnant. There were a couple adjustments to the meds, but overall it was very easy. started at 25 mcg, but am currently at 100 mcg. I had it tested yesterday again, to reassure myself and it is 1.19, which is perfect. Such a simple fix, and tho we don't know if that is for sure what was causing it, i feel like it almost had to be. I also was on progesterone from week 5-week 13.
I know this isnt the case for everyone, but when i got the results back, they seemed normal, and clearly were not.
Good luck, i know its hard, especially waiting for answers. And i hate that they make you wait for a 3rd before they do much testing....doesnt seem fair at all.
Hugs!! If you ever want to chat, message me. "

" Thanks KSW77 - at this point I'm just wondering when I will ovulate again and hoping I can get pregnant again in the next three weeks. It would be great if I did have a tyroid problem or if the progesterone does help support the pregnancy - but now the waiting game begins again. Good luck with your pregnancy and thanks for the support! "

" I had 2 miscarriages as well and they did a full blood work up on me from cell count, thyroid, all types of hormones. It equaled 6 vials of blood. Plus I had a pelvic ultra sound and they checked everything out and it all came back normal. We are discussing sperm analysis next as an option. "

" I also had the HSG done in February, where the insert the dye into your tubes, making sure there was no blockages/abnormalities. One side filled up a tiny tiny bit slower then the other, but all looked well. We didnt have anything done with the sperm as my SO has twin girls from a previous relationship, so he was a last resort. "
