cervical migraine

Has anyone out there experienced a cervical migraine? Lots of dizziness and some vertigo. Sensitivity to sound big time. And a horrible full feeling in the left side of the neck (carotid area) and discomfort deep into my inner ear. Usually not with a headache. This has been going on for 3 1/2 years. Started after I got an illness-maybe encephalitis. It is so scary. I haven't been formally diagnosed and there is no history of migraine in my family. I gave up caffeine, alcohol but I know some foods trigger it. Also exercise makes it worse as does lying down. Finding the right doctor has been a crapshoot. Please help!

I'm so sorry! It sounds painful and overwhelming. I do have dizziness and sound issues, but not the others. The only thing that comes to mind, which you may have tried, is going to a chiropractor. My last chiropractor adjusted my neck several times and it helped my neck tension.
I hope you get some relief soon.

Thanks for the reply. I've had 3 herniated discs in my neck so there is no way I will see a chiropractor. I know some people swear by them but I won't take that chance with my neck. I just need to get to the right neurologist who understands that migraine is not a bad headache as so many people believe. Maybe it isn't migraine but it sounds like it could be. Wish me luck.

I totally don't trust just any chiropractor--you are very right about your neck. My mom had back surgery at 23, but she consulted with a chiropractor when she was about 40. He was really careful and ended up helping her a lot. But, he was definitely special.
Finding a good Dr. is amazing difficult. I found mine 3 years ago--first person to ever listen to me!! They always asked what kind of meds I wanted. argh. Good luck!!

I feel ya with the doctor thing. I have been seeing my nuerologist for ... wow 4 years now. I continued to have headaches on a daily basis. Senstive to light and sound. The pain was right over and behind my eyes. I tried process of ellimination beofre I found my doctor. Sadly, I had to have three surgeries by doing it that way. Found a bunch of other things wrong with me. Dr. Daniel always asks me what I want, he also kind of acts like a psychiatrist. To see if my headaches are stress induced. I also get really tender on my head during some one my migraines, he said that it is called alladonia, I think that is how you spell it. Have you gone to a nuerologist? I would do some research and find a good one. I would refer you to mine but we are in Dallas.

We are not too far from the Dallas area but I am willing to travel. I need a neurologist that understands that a migraine is not just a bad headache and that it can occur anywhere in the body. He needs to understand too that you don't have to have a headache to have migraine disorder. If I do indeed have migraine, my concern is that my left carotid artery is involved and that scares me. My stuff is not stress induced so I would be concerned if a doctor thought it was and wanted to go after my psych. If I do have migraine now it is because of damage I incurred 3 1/2 years ago from probable encephalitis. I want a doctor to believe me, see this as a challenge, consult his/her colleagues if necessary, research data, etc. I also have that weird feeling where my head doesn't like to be touched. It doesn't really hurt but it feels like my brain is water and then when I touch the water (my head) it sends waves throughout. Weird analogy maybe but that's what I come up with. I really appreciate everyone's replies.

It is really hard to come up with analogies for how you feel. Everyone wants to know, but how do you explain? I like the water idea. I was thinking today that it's a bit like fizzy bubbles in a soda--it's one of my rare between days.

I have severe pain in my neck and frequent migraines. It sounds like you need to see a neurologist! If you had encephalitis, you could have some type of brain damage, from the encephalitis and actual insult to the brain. And, it also sounds like some type of pressure issue within the skull or brain. I am with you on the desire to have a doctor understand and have interest in helping you. I think this is a common problem within the medical field!
Take care! nsm

Well I don't know for sure if I had encephalitis due to the total incompetency of the doctors I had seen when I was feeling my worst. The one test that was never done was a spinal tap. I kept telling every doctor I saw that my brain does not feel good and that something is wrong with my brain. One of the last physicians I saw was actualyl a physician's assistant and when I told her my story she said it sounds like you had encephalitis. I didn't know this but it is most commonly caused by the herpes I virus (fever blister type). She asked me if I had herpes I and I told her that I didn't know because I have never had a fever blister or cold sore. She said let's go ahead and test you and just see. And the results were positive. I agree with the brain damage thing since I have felt abnormal ever since. I believe the damage to be in the brainstem as both inner ears were affected by whatever happened to me. And I know that damage doesn't always show up on a scan. I have always thought too about increased pressure in my brain because of my snow globe effect when I lie down but I just don't seem to have other symproms that are common to hydrocephalus. I know I need to see a neurologist. I put in a call to the office of a renowned neuro surgeon to recommend a neurologist that he knows in the area in which I live. So I am waiting to hear back. The symtoms fluctuate, never to the point of me feeling normal, but some days are better than others. Wish me luck. I'll keep in touch.
