I read that with the "mini" migraines one thing that often accompanies them is food cravings.

On Thursday I was really having food cravings. I did nothing till I made brownies on Friday.

Now, was I going to get a migraine anyway and the food cravings were a warning or did the food cravings lead to eating chocolate which led to the migraine today?

" I don't know about the minis, but I believe it is the chocolate not the caffeine that causes the migraines. And for me if I ate a brownies every day the accumulative affect would be a mirgaine in 3 or 4 days. I get cravings also for sweets and have been researching why. One site claims need more vitamins. For me, and this may strike some as strange but over the past year I was craving sweets like crazzy and the would pop a migraine when there was a full moon going on. Yesterday there was a big full moon.
the craving begin a few days before. Now I looked up migraines and full moon and there are tons of people who claim of cravings mood swings, and migraines during this time. Hey with all the other triggers who know. Had a migraine yesterday as well. "

" Last Thursday I had food cravings like NEVER before. I also wanted a hamburger (LOL) and not necessarily chocolate which is very odd for me.

In the past, it was something I wanted, this time I had to have it.

The issue regarding chocolate and not caffeine is an interesting one. It is hard to separate at times.

I love one particular brand of decaf tea (from Ireland) but if I use Red Rose I won't have migraines and if I use the Irish brand I might get a migraine. "

" I'm still very iffy about the caffeine thing. I do react to chocolate, but I'm going off caffeine for two weeks right now to see what happens. Hope it isn't caffeine, because black tea is so yummy!

I crave sweets a lot, so I'm curious about your research, starkeeper. What if what I'm craving is what's destroying my life? "

" I often get food cravings before a breakthrough migraine (I have migraine ALL the time, but often the pain breaksthough VERY strongly and I get all the symptoms......like the last 2 or 3 days) Things like chocolate and other sweets may either raise our own or simulate serotonin, so there is a connection.

Also, we need to remember, the amount of caffiene in chocolate is NEGLIGABLE, there is barely ANY caffeine in chocolate, even strong, high "caoco" ultra dark chocolate. There IS a chem called Theophyllyn, which is similar to caffiene and is a strong vasodilator, which is only one of the several reason choclate triggers migraines in many of us.

Chocolate also contains Tyromine and Tyrosine, (one is an amino acid) which is known to trigger migraines in some. ALSO, chocolate "beans" have to be fermented to get them out of the shell, so THERE IS AN OTHER REASON for trigger. Fermented foods effect many of us.

I find that I can eat chocolate in small amounts, as long as I don't have my period. Also, I have to be careful with the great stuff for a few days AFTER my period. The rest of the month, I seem OK with chocolate, which is good because I LOVE it so much. "

" I gave up caffeine for 3 months to try to get rid of my Migraines..know what I found? I still had Migraines even without the caffeine..In fact, once I started to drink caffeine again the migraines would go away faster. I dont know...everyones body is different.

Reading this post made me want chocolate though haha...

The full moon idea is very interesting.. "

" I have a friend who has a lot of insomnia. If she has two cups of coffee, she can finally fall asleep.

Therefore, I have to question if perhaps for some people, caffeine works in reverse. "

" I never have trouble sleeping on caffeine. I think I'll find that caffeine doesn't make a difference with me.
That is very interesting about the fermenting process with cocoa. I have a lot of trouble with mold and fermentation. Allergies and migraines. The chocolate thing is a bummer, though, b/c I love chocolate. But, my reaction was so bad and so quick, that I haven't craved it since I stopped. "
