NO Botox for Migraines, Allergan will GROW EYELASH

If this doesn't beat all. Allergan, the makers of Botox, a drug which MAY help Migriaine sufferer,s but MOST OF US CAN'T GET IT because Allergan has made excuses and wasted time getting FDA approval for Migraine use (although they sell the drug, which is ONLY FDA approved for forehead wrinkles, and sweaty palms) NOW Allergan, (who for years claimed they didn't have the resources to test Botox for Migraines (the tests are "underway" right now, but they have been going on for years, still no APPLICATION to the FDA for migraine use, and Allergan couldn't care less, because they MAKE MORE MONEY selling the drug for wrinkles.)
NOW the company has somehow FOUND THE TIME AND MONEY to create, test, market and GET FDA APPROVAL for a drug which (now listen carefully, because this is a VERY important use) GROW YOUR EYELASHES. The drug is called "Latisse." How nice for those who HAVE MONEY for expensive, PRESCRIPTION cosmetics while the rest of us suffer because we can't afford DRUGS or healthcare for our REAL MEDICAL PROBLEMS. Thanks Allergan, you CAPITALIST PIGS. Yep. A drug, which you have to get your doctor to write a prescription for, which will cost you an average of $140.00 PER MONTH, and has to be used for FOUR MONTHS to see any "improvement" and HAS to be used forever to KEEP your new eyelashes, has been FDA approved, and is being marketed by the company which STILL hasn't gained FDA approval for using Botox for MIGRAINES. Here's a quote about the "drug" (cosmetic) "Allergan estimates the drug, likely to be called Latisse, could generate global sales of more than $500 million per year." A** holes. And Brooke Shields is theirs spokes person. I guess because before she started using LATISSE, she was so damn UGLY before she used this drug. (I have had NO respect for this woman since she endorsed a certain brand of BABY FORMULA (for money) some years ago, after singing the praises of breaastmilk. Sure, I trust her (HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY sarcasm.) Screw Allergan. They KNEW about the migraine alleviating effects of Botox more than a decade ago, they INTENTIONALLY ONLY got FDA approval as a cosmetic, because they KNOW it makes them more money than ACTUALLY HELPING PEOPLE IN PAIN WITH THIER DRUGS. They are going to wait until the copyright (or whatever it is called, I am to angry to even write) on Botox Expires and then release it in a SLIGHTLY different form, maybe for migraine, WHY SHOULD THEY ALLOW THOSE OF US WITHOUT A MODEL or Movie Actresses Income be allowed to use this drug? THAT is one of the reasons that Botox isn't FDA approved (which would allow those of us whose insurance won't pay for it, because "it isn't FDA approved for migraine" to try it) YET. They have HAD THE TIME AND OBVIOUSLY HAVE THE MONEY to have got this drug FDA approved a decade ago. I am PISSED. Posted on 10/09/09, 01:10 pm |

I love your commentary! However, I had botox for migraines and another condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia which is head and facial neuralgia. The botox made me worse and also caused permanent nerve damage. It was a horrible experience and I couldn't wait for the effects to wear off.
Botox also carries a lot of risk and can kill you so is this why the FDA is holding off? I don't know. I didn't know that Latisse was botox! I have read that Latisse can change the color of the iris to a deeper pigment and the change is permanent - this doesn't sound good at all! Who knows what kind of other damage it will do to the eyes as well. The quest for beauty has gotten out of control in this world. I agree with everything you say but I am just letting you know that botox is not a wonder drug for everybody and it can cause PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE and you do not want to know what that feels like. Botox was a horrible treatment for my migraines. And I am pissed too!

I didn't mean to say Latisse IS Botox, they are two different drugs, but they are put out by the same company, Allergan.
Latisse is NOT Botox. But the same manufacturer who claimed not to have the "resources" to test Botox for FDA approval (which is the only way most of us can even try it, as I cannot afford even ONE treatment without insurance) but had the time and money to INVENT, test, bring to the FDA and get approval WHILE BOTOX sat there NOT being tested or approved. It's just one more gun in the arsenal, and I would like to try it. It might help, so I can take less dope. I know Botox isn't for everyone, but my doctor knows me well, and knows my medical history and thinks it would be a good thing to try. I'm not expecting a wonder drug, just something so maybe I can take less daily opiates. I have tried over 65 different drugs in the last 30 years or so, and we are running out of ideas. The opiates work, but I would like an alternative, as they do have side effects, one of which is making my life difficult right now. I'm sorry the Botox caused nerve damage. Are you unable to move the upper part of your face, or is the pain worse? I'm sorry to hear it.

Argh, I just wrote a long comment and it got blown away! Here we go again!
I must be taking too many opiates to think that botox is latisse because that would be really stupid to have people painting botox near their eyes! I am an idiot! And what works for one person may not work for another and vice versa. I am holding off MVD surgery because there are so many people in my support group that have had bad experiences with the surgery but I started thinking yesterday that I should just try it despite what other people have gone through because it could give me a chance at a new life. I have had TN for 19 years and I am at my wits end. I am taking morphine and oxycodone and nerve meds (8 in all). It does get old. They don't get me high and make life fun, they make me feel like I am in a coma, sleepy and it barely even cuts the pain half of the time. I can move my face but it just hurts all of the time. I have atypical neuralgia (which is constant pain ) and also the trigeminal neuralgia (which is the bolts of pain). I have started using Lidocaine in my mouth which helps but it hurts a lot to apply but I will figure it out. Botox has been approved for the condition that is excessive sweating under the arms and it is covered by insurance now.. So if that is covered then migraines or head pain should be as well. Perhaps a petition could get started? Would that be a way to change the situation? You could get a lot of signatures here. What do you think? Oh, and thank you for your compassion. I appreciate that. I hope you feel better too. -Holliday

Oh, honey, you are NOT an "idiot." We all get confused (especially about 1/2 hour or so after we take a dose of Poly Meds.) I have written to Allergan, several times, and they tell me they ARE "in the process" of "testing" Botox for Migraine, but have not submitted it for approval yet. Want to bet they are just waiting for that "Cosmetic" exclusivity contract to end? That's what I think. Then they can repackage it, and sell it as a "new drug."
Even though it is available for sweating, my insurance will STILL not cover it. They didn't even want to cover my Hydrocodone and my Oxy. They suck.
