I'm an emotional wreck...... A very mean co-worker said I was worthless and she wanted me out of third grade. Well, just so happens I was reassigned to first grade for this coming year.

I suffer from intractable migraines, I take 300mg of Topamax, Zanaflex, and Maxalt. I also have 3 bulging discs in my Neck, so I do have pain every day.

Anyway, the last day of school, an hour before I start my Summer vacation, the Principal (who is relatively new), came into my room and wanted to talk to me privately. He said, "I will be evaluating you again this coming year (he doesn't have to), I want to see you teach in every subject, because you need help, you have issues."

I'm really not sure what this means!?! Has the pain, the migraine disease, or the medicine side effects finally started to ruin my life? Should I start the disability process?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

P.S. I have been teaching for 13 years, and have always had good evaluations.

" Stop those drugs...I'm telling you...

Topamax especially has effects that are bad that you don't even notice...it doesn't let you know you're doing weird things.

I had a bad experience on just 50 mg and the docs never tell you how you'll withdraw from them after you stop them.

Talk to your doctor and see what he thinks about it. If you google all of the possible crazy side effects those drugs can have you may start to recognize them in yourself.

*hugs*

I feel for you....talk to your doctor...those drugs can be great for some people but can cause so much turmoil in the lives of others...

I didn't know who I was for a whole WEEK....because of Topamax....

so....yeah....I would talk to my doc and see what he/she thinks

Keep us updated "

" I agree that the topamax may be a problem. Please talk to people you trust and ask them if they have seen any changes in your behavior and please join the teacher's union......... We survive day to day sometimes even hour to hour and we need all the support we can get........talk openly with your doc and also your friends/family and please try and enjoy your summer! "

" If you have been able to work with these headaches, no matter how hard it is, then you dont qualify for disability. To get disability, you have to be 100% unable to perform ANY type of work at any profession. If you can sell newspapers, pump gas or work at McDonalds even part time, then you are not disabled. The fact that you have been working all this time, proves you are not completely disabled (although i'm sure you feel that way). Perhaps its time to take on a new line of work. Something with less stress. A comment on topamax - it made me into a complete idiot. I tell people that I because the living version of every dumb blonde joke I ever heard. I was on 50 mg. It totally ruined my mind - it was horrible. I've been off it about 5 months now and while some of my cognitive skills have returned, I never returned to where I was before I was on it. Just something to consider. "

" I'm not quite sure about the comments on disability. I always thought you had to be unable to continue your chosen profession. But aside from that I'm certain that even after you are on disability you are allowed to earn up to $800/month. "

" Dan:
I am 100% positive about disability - I went through the process and just recently got approved. The criteria is you have to be unable to perform ANY type of work - it can be cleaning dog kennels, they dont care. I have a friend on the disability board who was a doctor and at her social security hearing was told that based on doctor reports, it appears she can physically handle being a laundry mat attendant or a cashier, therefore she was denied. And you cant earn $800 a month. You are allowed to earn up to 15% of your award, whatever that amount is. SSA sends you to a functional test and their representative notes everything you are able to do and they enter your abilities into a computer which matches you with possible occupations. And, if you are capable of earning $550.00 a month with your current medical condition (not per week), then you dont qualify at all. You have to be out of work for 5 months before you can even apply. The process is hell. "

" I would look into the side effects of Topamax also. The doctor tried to put on it and the first day I took it my heart was racing and I started losing the feelings in my arms and hands. I went online and read the consumer reviews of the medicine and the side effects was very bad. I recommend you talking to your doctor about changing your meds. "
