Does anyone know if having too much sugar can cause a migraine? This weekend i was having a great day then at 4am i woke up with a migraine. The only thing I did different was have some sweets before bed, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it??

I have noticed that sweets do affect my headaches. The sweetner Aspartame makes my headaches severe.

For me this is never a problem that I have ever noticed. It is one of those things with migraines that is so dang frustrating....they can be so different and individual.
I actually gave myself a migraine because I know that getting over tired and not going to sleep when my body says go to sleep I am setting myself up for pain. Well sure enough I felt it coming on before finally giving in and going to sleep and woke up this morning with it bursting out of my skull

I know that having low blood sugar can give me a migraine. If you had more sugar than you normally do, your blood sugar might have crashed and resulted in a migraine.

If my blood sugar DROPS (meaning I have not eaten recently) I get a really bad migraine. But eating a moderate amount of sugar doesn't cause problems.
When I was in my 20s, when my oldest children were young I went through a VERY annoying (at least for other people) health food kick. I would criticise other people for eating "junk" I would NEVER have sugar, white flour, pop, prepared food or sweet of any kind in my house. I went WAY overboard, and become nearly impossible. Funny thing was, even with this "health food" diet, I felt NO BETTER than I ever did, and even after years of eating like this, I still got cravings for yummy things, but felt guilty for indulging in them. And worst of all, I found out later, my kids were sneaking snack foods at friends and relative's houses. THIS is not a way to be. Everything in moderation. Too much sugar isn't good, but SOME isn't bad (unless you are diabetic.)

Hi... It was probably the additives in the sweets... I would avoid those sweets in future... I got a migraine last Saturday and the only thing I had different was cheap cola... which I will never drink again!

I have had the same experience but it seems that if I eat something that has chocolate in it is when I wake up with the 4am migrane. I also have found the same as newgirl57 that the Aspartame or typically any artifical sweetner sparks the onset of a migrane.

I have found if the sweet has too much red food dye, I might get a headache.

Hi, I am new here but all I can say is that I quit all sugar 3 years ago and stayed "clean" for 2 years - it's the only thing I ever did that took away migraines completely. I NEVER had a headache once I was off it. Also I lost 40 pounds with no effort at all. Now I am "on the wagon again" with sugar, i.e., THE WHITE MENACE, in all its deliciously destructive forms. Very difficult to quit it and yes, I have regained all 40 pounds....
