I have a friend that is being refused estrogen based birth control because she has migraines with aura. Planned Parenthood is telling her that there is potentially fatal interaction that can occur. Has anyone ever heard of this?

" Most of my experience with BC has been progesterone based products....currently I take the shots. HOWEVER....I did try a change and was using the NuvaRing for about 6 months. Let me tell you what BIG FAT MISTAKE!!!! Not only did I have more frequent migraines but I also had much more intense migraines. I also suffered from debilitating vertigo and was completely miserable the entire time. I had those migraines every single time it was time to put in a new ring and it would last from just a day or two in the beginning to the whole 3 weeks it was in. They ranged from the annoying sicky ones to the ones where I wished there was some way I could pull my head off and store it for a while until it stopped hurting.

Now I am not sure about the fatal interactions but I do know that for 6 years of the shots to going on the ring to going back on the shots I will NEVER EVER go back to estrogen based BC ever again it just isnt worth it. "

" I just switched birth control pills from yaz to another generic version because of migraines. But she had no problem with me starting to take the migraine pills while I was on Yaz, which has both estrogen and progestin. And she didn't tell me there were any fatal interactions. "

" I decided to do a search using migraines with estrogen. I got this site http://www.migraines.org/treatment... and it talks about how women with auras have a greater risk for strokes that greatly increases with other risk factors such as age and smoking.

I love google and I would really suggest seeing what you can find on there as well. "

" My migraines went from rare and well-controlled to daily and constant when my idiotic prescription plan told me to take a "generic equivalent" of my BC pills that were not only not an equivalent, they actually had 2x the active ingredient. I don't know what interaction they could be talking about but some migraines can lead to strokes and so can BC pills. I have never heard, though, that taking BC pills can make a stroke more likely specifically if you get migraines. I would ask my doctor if I were you. "

" I have heard of birth control causing more migraines... initially a long time ago my doctor didn't want to prescribe b/c for my awful periods because she told me it would make my migraines worse.... but I don't remember the why, or details..... and I haven't tried any other form of b/c other than condoms, mostly because I'd heard of it making migraines worse and wasn't willing to risk that...
