Does anyone get this shot from your neuro when you have a severe migraine that won't go away? If so do you feel better after you wake up but then the next day the headache is back with a vengance?

After trying so many rescue shots, none working at all, me and my old Dr. discovered that Nubain and phenergan was the ONLY one that would knock mine out fast.. and no, mine would not come back, I am always very draggy the next day, just tired and but no migraine.
I am so sorry that this is happening to you. I do completely understand . God Bless You!!! Lori

Thank you LKim. There is always something that will work for everyone is just the long drawn out process that's torturous. God Bless

I've never had the nubain, but I do get phengren injections for severe migraines. It knocks me out and makes me groggy the whole next day but it does get rid of the migraine.

That is the only thing that will totaly kick my migraines. Once it has gotten to the point the nausa has turned to vomiting. My family doctor keeps my own perscription of the two meds in his offic for me. And if it get to bad I just go into his office and get one of the shots. Or if it is the weekend I have to go the clinic and get the shot. But yes it is the best one for me.

Nubain/phenergan is also the only thing that knocks my migraines out. It is a lifesaver for me. Be careful, however, because Nubain is a tricky med. It is a mixed opioid agonist/antagonist and can have a reverse effect. Basically, if you aren't already taking pain meds (such as Lortab, Percocet, Demerol etc.), it is equipotent to morphine, BUT if you have a tolerance built up to narcotic pain relievers, it can actually send you into withdrawals!

Thanks for the info elixiris. I haven't heard of that. Did you have this happen to you?
Most of the time the shot combo works for me & sometimes it doesn't.

I have severe migraines once or twice a year...sick ones where I'm vomiting and have to go to the doctor's office or ER. I've suffered from migraines for about 18 yrs, but the severe ones like this started ten years ago. The first time I went to the doctor's office and she gave me a shot of something for naseau and a shot of Demerol; I was pain free and sleepy by the time I left her office. I always go home and sleep for about four hours and feel like a new woman when I wake up.

I have never figured out why neurologists are so enamoured with phenergran, espeically when there's no nausea involved. I had a neurologist take away my rescue medication (Fioricet) and replace it with phenergran to be taken 3 times a day. All that accomplished was to remove any semblance of pain relief whatsoever and cause tardive dyskinesia, uncontrolled Parkiinson-like muscle movements, in my arms and legs that can become permanant in time if the medication caising it is not discontinued immediately (I called my nephrologist and stopped taking the phenergan immediately; the neruologist didn't think it was that big of a deal....he's no longer my neurologist!).
That's not to mention that the phenergran injections burn like crazy, even in an IV when very diluted and have destroyed what few good veins I had in my lower left arm. Nubain sounds a bit scary if you're also on an opiod for any other type of pain. Having experienced naloxone (an opiod antagonist used to for overdoses of opiods) for a medical error that caused an opiod overdose and stopped by breathing in a hospital, I'd be very leery of nubain. Somehow I can imagine it causeing withdrawal symptoms for the oxycodone I take for chronic pain for polycystic kidney and liver disease as it somehow also tries to treat my migraine pain. I think I'll stick with Fioricet for migraines, ginger for any nausea, and my oxycodone for my unrelated chronic pain of polycystic kidney and liver disease. They seem to work okay thus far. Not the perfect solution, but the best I have right now. If I could take some supplemental magnesium I suspect I could better control my migraines, but also my kidney function precludes that option. I'm glad to hear the combination works for some people!

I take Phenergan in pill form along with Oxycodone or Dilaudid, which ever I can get my hands on. It is amazing that the pharmacy I used for over 3 1/2 years, can't seem to keep Dilaudid 8 mg in stock. I am one of it's few customers that gets it on a regular basis. ( Had to vent. ) I have other meds to. Too many, if you ask me.
