Fiorinal

I have been taking Fiorinal for over 20 years for my migraines when I get them, which is off and on and the only way I know I am going to get one is I have an aura first.
If I take the Fiorinal right when the aura occurs in my eyes, then it will kill the migraine in 15 minutes. But if I wait until the headache has already started, then the Fiorinal will not help at all. It has been pretty reliable for me. Maybe it would be worth trying for others who get the migraines. I agree it should be on the "to do" list. I started taking fiorinal when I was 15. By the time I was 17, a handful of tylenol worked much better. And that was taking in to concideration all my pre-pain signs like auras, aurel disturbances, dizziness, nausea and smells that weren't really there. I just hope my kidneys forgive me for all the tylenol.

Fiorinal C 1/2 is Fiorinal with 30mg of codeine. If you had gotten Fiorinal C 1/4, it would be 15 mg of codeine.
I believe that if you don't have migraines that often, Fiorinal can a good option when it works as a total abortive. However, barbs are not something you want in your system consistently. And Fiorinal and Fioricet have the highest likelihood of causing rebound headache. To the point where they have been banned in some European countries, deemed causing more harm than good.

soo, does regular Fiorinol contain any codiene? I am not happy about that b/c it already makes me sleepy...so the C1/2 will not be good..i guess i could always empty half the capsule out? I take these VERY rarely b/c of the fact it makes me so tired. Thanks 4 that info~~

Regular Fioninal is just a barbiturate (which are addictive), aspirin, and caffeine. I don't mention addictive to frighten people that they are going to become a drug addict if they take this med, but more to let them know if they take it often and then abruptly stop - there can be sharp withdrawal. Enough to cause seizures. If you've been taking it often for awhile, you don't want to ever have to go off of it cold turkey.
If it has codeine it will be labelled in some way. Either with an extra C, or with having COD marked along with the little list of the ingredients. The codeine is truly less threatening ingredient when compared with the butalbital (the barb). If you cut it in half then you will be removing half of the rest of the ingredients as well, which means the entire thing will be half as effective, not just the codeine. Once again, if it works for you and is something you only take for that once a month migraine that gets out of control, then taking it isn't problematic. Take what works, just be aware of the consequences.

I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH DAILY/CHRONIC MODERATE HEADACHES AND SOME ARE MIGRAINES OR MIGRAINE LEVEL PAIN. I HAVE BEEN TAKING FIORICET W/CODEINE FOR THEM. MY INJURY WAS ON MARCH 2, 2006 AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING ONE FORM OR ANOTHER OF NARCOTICS TO EASE THE PAIN. I THINK I HAVE BEEN ON THE FIORICET W/CODEINE FOR OVER 1 1/2 YEARS. INITIALLY, I ONLY NEEDED 2 IN A DAY TO FEEL RELIEF. NOW I TAKE 4-6 ALONG WITH DILAUDID FOR WHEN IT IS BAD. I HAVE BEEN WARNED MANY TIMES NOT TO STOP TAKING IT SUDDENLY. BE VERY CAREFUL HOW OFTEN YOU TAKE IT. I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO GET RID OF MY CHRONIC PAIN. 2 YEARS SINCE THE INJURY AND ON MY 4TH DOCTOR WHO IS VERY PROMISING IN TREATMENT. HE RUNS A PAIN CENTER THAT SPECIALIZES IN HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES.

With regards to reply #8-
What can you tell me about Dilaudid? I was discharged from the hospital after my last knockdown drag out migraine with a bottle of dialaudid. I have not had to take any (so far). I too was on fiorinal for over 20 years. It worked well- however about 5 years ago my neuro convinced me to try Imitrex. I am thrilled with it. It works 98% of the time. Its just those 2% headaches that scare the hell out of me. Thats why I have the dilaudid. I have a massive supply of narcotics here! ugh! Thank god I am not an addict!
