migraine or stoke?

Yesterday I traveled by car for 5 hours. During the trip I felt numbness right hand and arm, spacey, heart squeezing feeling and mild pain, then eye sight changed, kaleidoscopic like clear moving stuff lower vision. I felt really weird, weak, at times nausea, dizzy, perspiring around forehead. Today I have a squeezing feeling in my chest, I took a migraine pill yesterday (maybe affected heart) It bugs me when I try to do more I have these scary consequences. So I am wondering if I had migraine, only had mild headache at times, but bad neck and shoulder pain or mild stoke. It was definately more than most migraine events I have experienced.

I would appreciate advice regarding was it a migraine or small stroke?

" Many times I've asked myself, is it?!

I was told that if you stick out your tongue and it comes out crooked, go to the hospital. But ask someone else to tell you if it is crooked, because you may not be able to tell. "

" Thank you for replies, Most of the symptoms happened before I took sum...a something for migraine, chest and heart happended more after that med. I know it is good advice to get it checked out, but I don't want to add to medical bills. I only have extreme fatigue and left
shoulder and chest discomfort today.

Thanks for reminding me about the crooked tongue test. I had completely forgotten about that.

" I agree with the contributor who said always get new symptoms checked. I went to the ER the first time I had one-sided numbness. It turned out to be a new type of aura, but my dr said I did the right thing. Those of us with crazy migraine wiring never know what new trick our brain will play on us, but we can't afford to ignore anything that could be serious. I sympathize with you. "

" Kathy,

You need to be seen by a Neurologist.

The symptoms you describe could be side affects of the medications you are taking but they could also be symptoms of something much more dangerous.

Please take these symptoms serriously, do NOT downplay their significance, and be seen by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Have you had a cranial (brain) MRI or Cat Scan taken recently?

If not, please request one when you see the neruologist.

Good luck,

Dr. Scott Tamura

" A few years ago I had a similar experience and called 911 due to a nervous wife. In the ambulance they evaluated me for a stroke, but were not too concerned. When I got to the ER they went into stroke mode but by then the symptoms, except for numbness, went away. The neurologist on call diagnosed me with a TIA and admitted me for observation. I do have a complicated health history and high blood pressure. I also suffer from terrible migraines although I had no head pain with this incident.

I left the next day thinking great, along with everything else in my history I now have a mild stroke in my history. However, a week later I visited my regular neurologist who said he did not think I had a TIA at all but an irregular migraine headache. So who knows who was right. I make sure I take my blood pressure meds (three of them) as directed - scared to death to skip them. I've had no lasting affects from the incident.

I definitely always recommend you go to the ER if you even suspect you might be having a stroke. The lasting affects are too awful not too.

Just wanted you to know that apparently a migraine can mimic a stroke, but again, I would not ignore it, go to the ER or call 911. "

" I had some similar symptoms with a migraine nearly a year ago. From my research it can be very difficult to tell a migraine from a stroke since some migraines can mimic stroke in every way. The main difference is that strokes symptoms usually occur much faster than migraines also a stroke will leave lasting damage whereas a migraine will fade; TIAs being an exception, they do not always leave lasting damage either. " Oh look up Basilar migraines and hemipeligic migraines and you will likely recognize many of your symptoms. "

" I have had 3 TIA now from migraines. They are just short of a stroke. Had to relearn how to talk from one of them. You definitely need to see a Dr. And get an MRI to see what has happened in your head. Nothing to play around with. Good luck. "
