I have had migraines for 9-10 years... it runs in the family, but I have never taken anything specifically for migraines. I started taking 500mg tylenol with codeine when i was 12, but that didnt really work, and none of the over-the-counter stuff works, but they are killing me.. and I cant sleep at night. What is something that is good to try first that I could ask my doctor about?! I don't want something with a lot of side effects and I also have a history of depression/anxiety [not sure if that matters]. Any advice?

" Your best bet is NOT to go into the office asking for a particular drug. Talk to your doctor, and he can choose a drug (or several of them) based on your symptoms and what you have already tried.

Every one is different and what works for one may not work for someone else. IMO, a Neurologist is MUCH better suited to treat migraines than a Primary Care Doc. "
