I was just prescribed this medication today. Has anyone else used it? What were the results? My doctor said there is only a 20% chance of any migraine preventions working.

He, himself, gets migraines and says if you take 2 liters of Sprite, you can get rid of the migraine without medication. Has anyone tried it? I am not sure how that works.

" I can't imagine there are any magical properties in Sprite; it's probably just the 2 liters of fluids that works (which indicates that he's probably chronically dehydrated and thus dehydration is one of his triggers).

Good luck with the new meds. "

" Sprite? My guess is he doesn't get bad migraines, if that works for him. I agree with ihavepkd in that it is probably the fluid that helps, not anything special in Sprite. (My father, who RARELY gets headaches, claims, when on the occasion he DOES get a headache, they are migraines, despite ANY migraine symptoms claims that he "can cure" migraines with a can of Coca Cola. I have stopped telling him ANYTHING about my migraines, because he harps on about "Have your tried a can of Coke?" My GOD, dad, if a Can of Coke worked for my pain, do you think I would have spent the last 25 or 30 years or so in misery?

I am not familiar with Zonegran.

My guess would be closer to any ONE preventative "working" many people do have luck with preventatives, that doesn't mean they NEVER get migraines, just that they are less common. I know the Zoloft I take works as a preventative, despite my being chronic and intractable. The migraines are worse without it, so it does work some. Few people get by with ONLY a preventative.

your doctor should also know better that just because something works for him, it likewise will work for everybody. Saying "Two litres of Sprite works for all headaches." with NO FDA or AMA backing is a little anecdotal for a doctor to say. A better way to have phrased it would have been, "This works for me." But, again, fluid works for some people. I've NEVER had fluid CURE a migraine, but I keep myself highly hydrated all the time. I hope this doctor isn't a "drugs aren't the answer" kind of guy. The "only 20% chance of preventatives working." (Which if he meant ALL preventives put together is TOTALLY wrong) and "Sprite cures headaches." I kind of wonder what his bottom line philosophy on Pain Treatment is. "

" My doctor usually pushes meds, all kinds of meds. LOL

I remember when I had one extremely painful migraine and no pills worked, he said get Sprite and start drinking. I think part of the reason it works is because some people like me don't care for water. So if you can get a lot of any fluid down, you are doing better than not.

I also agree that he is probably typically dehydrated. I am too. "

" Oh, I see, so he is using it as a "This is a last ditch effort." thing? I understand. I have been told, when maxed out on my pain meds, and still raging pain to try an OTC med and fluids. I am really glad your doctor is OK with prescribing for you when you need it, also.

:) "
