How do I talk to my doctor?

My migraines are pretty bad, but I’ve always figured that I could take care of them on my own. Take some Excedrin and lay down until it goes away, but lately they haven’t been going away. Last night I was in so much pain, I threw up over and over, cried and could hardly stand up. Even breathing hurt, every time I moved, it was almost too much to take. I had to drive home, and had to pull over to throw up. The thing is I’m not sure on how to ask my doctor about it. I get nervous about telling my doctor when something is wrong. Yes I know that makes no sense but I’m always afraid that they will find something wrong with me…anyhow I’m not sure I can do this on my own anymore. I’m taking a dangerous number of migraine OTC meds, and that can’t be good for my body, but the pain is getting worse. It’s like my brain is trying to get out of my head, with fire and explosions. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to talk to my doctor.

I remember feeling like you.. when my old Dr. was gonna send me for an MRI, I cried, I didn't want to go.. fear overtook me, of all the what if's.. but nothing showed up,
As far as advice.. it all depends on your Dr. Alot of people with migraines go through alot with Dr's.. some work well with you, some don't .. I finally found the most wonderful DR. last November. I have been through 2 before her. Always be honest and always remember.. YOU are the one hurting, and YOU are the one who knows how bad the pain is. Please let us all know, but you do need to go talk to your Dr. There is alot of Prescription meds out there that DO work. God Bless You! Lori

Yes, it definitely sounds like you need some prescription abortive drugs. Unless you want to continue living like this, you have no choice but to explain to your doctor you have these migraines and you desperately need help. At that point he will probably give you a few samples, write a prescription and may also refer you to a neurologist.
For you it takes courage, take things one step at a time.

My best advice would be to take a friend or family member with you that understands your anxiety. Before you go in to the doctor write down all your symptoms, meds you've tried and any questions you have for the doctor, then if you are too afraid to read the paper you made just hand it to the doctor. Something has to change, you cant just keep suffering the way that you have or you won't be able to live a fun life! ;) My migraines have been so severe lately I almost cant get off the couch without falling down crying and if I hadn't gone in for help I couldn't be any kind of a good mom to my kids. Good Luck, my name is Alesha write me any time and we can help each other!
