Hello all,
I'm new here and I've been suffering from migraines every other day for over 6 years. I have tried Depakote but it has made me gain too much weight so now the doctor has me trying Verapamil. Has anyone tried this medication and if so was it effective for you?

" Hi. I just started Verapamil as well so I haven't seen any major change yet but it can take up to 3 months to see a change. It wasn't my doc's first choice though as an FYI. Inderol is more effective as far as my understanding (a beta blocker instead of a calcium channel blocker), but Inderol was causing some mood/depression probs which is why I had to switch. Also, the Inderol and Verapamil were both to be in Combo with my Topamax, not alone. I am a severe case though (up to 22 days with migraine a month) so maybe that's why that combo. Sorry this isn't too helpful.
I see your post was a month ago -- did the Verapamil help at all???? "

" I am taking 240mg of Verapamil each day. I have chronic vesitbular migraines...from the time I get up to the time I go to bed. The pain and pressure have been reduced with the Verapamil but the imbalance is still disabling. I haven't had any side effects. My doctor wants me to go up to 360mg but that requires an EKG due to potential heart issues. No thanks! "

" I am taking Verapamil in conjuction with Inderol and Lithium. Before starting the Varapamil the Inderol alone was not too effective. The combination of the two seem to allow me to function at of pain level of 7 (scale 1 to 10, 10 be the worst) most days. "

" Thanks for the replys. I have my bottle of verapamil but I haven't taken it yet. I am currently taking Zomig and it's the best. But I need to take something to prevent the migraines. "

" I have MY bottle of Verapamil too but I am waiting to see how others do on it. I don't like the idea of taking BP medication. "

" I read on another website the reviews of verapamil and people were saying it made their blood pressure too low and they starting to feel like they were going to pass out. So that's why I have been skeptical about taking it. "

" I started 120 Verapamil SA for three weeks and I had a few side effects. They were:
My personality really changed, I snapped at everyone and was in general not a nice person (Which is not me!)
I could not sit still I always had a twitch or tap or keep my hands busy with something
It caused my IBS to flair severely

Keep in mind that I am probably an unusual case but it did nothing to help my Migraine and made me feel terrible. Although, the great part of this was when I called the neurologist because the side effects were so bad and he said that it cannot cause any of those side effects and to stay on it; even though I could not function. I stayed on it for five more days and then went off of it and the side effects went away within three days.

" I finally started taking it on Sunday and I don't feel any different yet. My blood pressure is usually about 110/76 or thereabouts so I am not sure I want it to go much longer.

I suspect it will take about 3 weeks to get into my system. By that time I will have a scheduled appt. with my neurologist to discuss it. "
