Help with Migraines?

Morning all,
I just have a few questions if anyone can answer them?
Im 20 healthy and active (i do at least 1hour excercise every day), i have no other 'problems' except hayfever, lol. I've only started getting migraines since i have been taking birth preventions i was on the depo jab for 2years and it has caused me to get numbness in my arms and legs due to lowering my bone density, Now i am taking the mini pill and my migraines have worsened. * Sometimes i feel like im making a deal out of nothing, and that is how people can look at it also sometimes is this the same for you guys too?
* Both my mum (sometimes she is in bed for days) and lil sis get bad migraines too, can they be hereditary?
* I have had 4.5 days off sick in a year and my employer is nagging at me saying "i get migraines too and i dont know of them lasting over a few hours" all because mine usually get worse in the afternoons at work (i think from the computer) so i will go home but not come in the next day as my head is still bad the next morning.
* Can i ask the doctor for any help with my employers? as i dont want to lose my job of have to quit with the current economic climate?
Thank you for feedback in advance im new to migraines so any help would be appreciated.

" Hi

I'm sorry i dont have a lot of time to answer you but I would like to say a few things.

Firstly that migraines definatly can run in families and they often do.

Also lots of people find that contraceptive pills make migraine worse- they actually help me but i am not allowed to take them as I have migraine with aura and the combination puts me at risk of a stroke.

I see on your profile you have just started a new med, try this for a resonable time and if it doesnt work go back and badger your doctor for something else.

Finally I hope you feel better soon

sorry i dont have more time to help right now, I have to go to a physio appointment in a moment.

" Hi Lorna,
Birth control pills definitely worsened my migraines. I had been on them in my early to mid-20's without a problem, but when I went on them again in my mid/late 30's they really threw me into a bad migraine pattern. I would suggest getting OFF the pill and trying something that has NO hormones involved for birth control. I am told that heredity can also play a part in migraines, although no one in my family has ever had a problem except me.
I had the same issue with work; next time you go to your doc get a work excuse. It sounds silly, but it at least legitimizes your problem for your employer. Apparently your employer gets regular headaches, not migraines, or else he/she would certainly have more sympathy... and they would suffer for more than a few hours too! Sounds more like tension or cluster headache in their case.
Do you have a prescription for your migraines? I got Imitrex and it works well (of course I am pregnant right now and can't use it, but it DID work before I was pregnant!). There are a ton of drugs out there apparently. If not, I would definitely go see a doc and get something, as they do work and typically significantly reduce the duration of the migraine.
I've also started this "anti-inflammatory" diet with flax oil and fish oil supplements, as well as magnesium and green tea. I am also supposed to add more ginger to my diet but have trouble with that. That seems to have helped.
No matter what you do, I would suggest getting OFF the pill immediately. If you need some form of birth control, try condoms (I know, yuck) or some other form of non-hormonal method. I think some women are just more sensitive to synthetic hormones. You could try it again in a couple of years, and maybe you would have better results. Hope this helps! "

" They can definitely be hereditary, both my sister and I struggle with menstrual migraines.

I would agree to go off the pill. I personally can't tolerate hormonal birth control, but used a diaphragm for years until we started trying to get pregnant.

And ask your doctor about medications. I take Frova (a triptan like Imitrex) and it works really well. And there are preventatives that are very effective for some people.

I find little things, like eating regularly and avoiding alcohol when I know I am susceptible help cut back on the number of days that I am miserable.

Good luck. "

" I CURED my migraines 20 years ago, after reading in a vitamin book ("Know Your Vitamins" by Linda Clark) that vitamin B3 is effective if taken at the onset. That's NIACIN, and it causes a flushing of the face, arms, ears, etc......and in the process flushes the migraine away!!!!!!!

Don't think the pharmaceutical industry wants this known. Niacin only costs about $3 a bottle! "
