Household full of MRSA

July 30, 2007 I had never heard of MRSA. Since then three members of our family of four have gotten it. My husband had a insect bite that turned into MRSA and was treated first with Bactrim DS and then with Vancomycin with a pic line and while he was being treated I came down with it. We were both off of medicine for 4 weeks and my 13 yr old daughter told me she had a bug bite on her knee and the next morning it had exploded. She was hospitalized for 4 days on Vancomycin and now is on Bactrim DS. I feel as though we have been given this plague and it must be in my house. I have scrubbed and sprayed clorox and lysol and still am scared to death who's next. I have gone to disposable razors andno sharing of towels antibacterial pump soaps and hand washing constantly. Any more helpful things I would appreciate it. Thanks, Amy

" It appears that you are doing everything according to protocol? At this point in time, the Medical profession doesn't have much else to offer. Thirteen years ago
they just ignored the horrible effects of
the disease and treated me as though I had a mental problem. Now it has weakened the strength in my right arm and leg. I've had a couple of major falls. As a result I need a new knee and neck sugery and doctors are telling me I'd loose my leg, definately. I am
going to see "specialists" in San Francisco and hopefully find someone who knows what they are talking about? This
MRSA thing has been a tough battle. "

" Hi Amy,

Your story is so close to what our family went through over 1 1/2 yrs. ago.
We nearly lost our son's to this horrible monster. We had the flesh eating MRSA with PVL toxin.
I know this will be hard for others to believe, however will dealt with this attack with natural antibiotics that are potent against resistant bacteria.
We tried several antibiotics that our MD gave us and they failed.
We were able to deal with horrible boils ourselves using topical and internal applications and dosing amounts.
Everything we did we ran by our MD and IDD and kept them informed every step of the way.
I will tell you more if you want. I don't get into all details on forums, because of lack of time, accusations, and others misunderstanding important details of fighting MRSA.
God bless you and your family, 3Free

" Amy, my advice to you is to continue to seek medical attention. Colonize the infection and treat the others as they appear. There however is NO CURE for Mrsa. It can be colonized but not cured. Don't let someone else tell you it can.

Staying healthy is the best thing that you can all do. I am sure you know this.
Sounds like to me your doing a good job. There will be infections which are inevitable with school age children. They do have a better immune system to help fight it.

They are finding new drugs to help fight this and hopefully one to kill this form of Strep.

I wish you luck and very good health for you and your family. "

" I gave it too my husband through sex.He got it quickly. He had to be treated 3 times.I gave it too my daughter.I gave it too my 3 month old grandaughter.Mine costed $50,000 to cure.My family members was $5,000 The baby was about $500.0
The trick is too have all the family members treated at the same time. The doctors do not do this. When you recover
from this you always double look at a sore you may get.You will never forget this crap.I have noticed when I'm in a dirty public place that it is most likely full of mrsa.I get the hell out of there. "

" Hi there

don't give up! despite what you may hear people have successfully gotten rid of MRSA both as an infection AND as something that colonises them. The problems with getting rid of colonisation are that it is potentially 1) expensive and 2) a lot of hassle for the patient. MRSA can colonise the skin, the nose and the gut....so just putting the stuff in the nose may miss a big source in the gut...maybe 50% of gut cultures can be positive for colonised people. The good news is that if your doctor and you decide on that treatment...when it is done right only about 5-10% of patients still have MRSa on swabs or in gut 6 months later. You have to remember MRSA is with us now...others have it on their skin who don't know...but we all have a ton of bugs on our skin. It will pop up from time to time. Colonisation is different from infection...if you are getting repeated infections I would guess you should speak to your doctor about more aggressive attempts to decolonise...skin washes, mouth washes, antibiotics as well as nose cream.

Good luck "

" You can help keep it at bay in your home with things like Purell and Hibiclens for wound cleaning and help in keeping the bug dead with regular use of Purell and hand washing. There are newer cleaners out that kill MRSA in the home, I know one was at SAMS Club/Costco, I will post again if I can remember the name.Just keep up with what you are doing and really be on top of any infection, keep it clean and dry. Also get help for colds, flu, strep sooner so the MRSA can't attach itself to that.
I have had to go on and off the pic lines and oral meds and such and my MRSA is now colonized, again. "
