Vancomycin - How long?

Hi,
A family memeber was diagnosed with MRSA close to 7 weeks ago. She's been on IV therapy (PICC line) for close to 6 weeks now. Vancomycin has helped but her reactive protein count is still quite high (57.6) as is her sedimentation rate (140). Her Infectious Disease doctor said she'd be on this medication for the full 8 weeks. Here's my questions: 1. Can you remain on vancomycin longer than 8 weeks? 2. After the 8wks, and her numbers remain high, what happens? Any input would help. Posted on 12/06/07, 02:12 pm |

That is normal.I was on a vanco like drug Zyvox and high doses of clindamyacin and augmentin.( I am allergic to Vanco ).Every time I have been on an IV for this, it has lasted at least 8 weeks, 2xs a day everyday.Has been up 4 months for me.
They will give it longer, or switch, depending on her bloodwork. And they will keep her on it till her blookwork comes back satisfactory for the doc.

Yes you can remain on vancomycin forever so we are told. Not sure if that is good. Do they know the source or where the infection is?

Yes to both of your questions ncbrowney.
The source of the infection was an operating room. The infection is located in a 7 inch incision in her back from spinal fusion.

anco is very hard on your kidneys... docs will continue to monitor her BUN levels and AST and ALT levels. As long as she is healthy, she should complete the treatment. The main concern with treating with Vanco is antibiotic resistance. Vanco is a "top dog" antibiotic and there is really nothing else stronger that it.

The doctor is doing weekly blood draws for various reasons such as the ones you mentioned in your post (BUN levels and AST and ALT levels).
She's responding well but her reactive protein count and sedimentation rate were still in the high range so they'll continue with the vanco for an additional 3 - 4 weeks. Thanks for the helpful post!

Wow! That is crazy. Maybe the reason I am still feeling so crappy is because I still have MRSA lingering in my system?!?! I was diagnosed in July and was on Vanco for 3 weeks. Then sent home on nothing. About a month later, I had a blood test and it showed presence of an infection-but they didn't know where or what. They just gave me a Z-pac and that was that. Didn't do anything, I don't think.

Wow squeaker8!
I’m not a medical professional but over the course of the past 3 months I’ve learned a great deal in re to MRSA and the proper treatment methods. My suggestion to you would be to schedule an appointment with an Infectious Disease doctor as soon as possible. They are the one’s most knowledgeable when it comes to proper treatment of this type of infection. When my mother-in-laws full course of vanco. is complete, she’ll be on a suppression dosage of an oral antibiotic (doxycycline) the next several years.

I would love to see another doctor, but I no longer have insurance-I am going in for a second opinion in Las Vegas for my Chiari Malformation.I just busted my butt for the last 3 weeks doing part-time babysitting to barely scrape up enough for the $300 consultation fee! It's getting to be a bit ridiculous.

Thanks for this as I was 'only' on it 4 days and three weeks later it seems to be back. ---I had no previous experience w/ MRSA so thus, no knowledge. It seemed to me that it was a good thing to have a brief trtmnt as I have a teen son that I did not wish to be away from. ---Now I question.
