No doctor will discuss this in depth with me. Said no new protcols needed at home. Afraid to ask any more Drs. and be denied treatment for her.
No symptoms now. She is fine and happy. How do I keep extended family safe? Do I let them come over? I couldn't find a support group for VRE so I came here. This is the lonliest experience I can ever imagine. Posted on 08/08/09, 06:08 pm |

Libby, maybe I missed an earlier posting? I assume that someone in your life has been diagnosed with VRE? (vancomycin resistant enterococcus) Is this in a bladder infection? Wound infection? Lung infection? If you can share some more information with us, I'll be happy to try to give you as much information as I can.

She is 'colonized'. She gets repeated lung infections. but clears her lungs completely and does fine in between. She is my 26 yr. old daughter. She has multiple disabilties, non verbal. she walks, swims loves music and people. Feeding tube. they keep trying to send hospice over here but right now she is nto suffering at all. Lung Dr. said she is terminal but just got a new portacath and going to use vanco at home as needed. she has had spesis 3 times. I know how fast it can be. what gericide can I use at home. I am using universal protocol since I found out. She has 5 different caregivers comiong into our home. I am the employer for most shifts
The hospital failed to tell me it was on her record since 2007. I just read that Medicare will no longer pay for 'hospital acquired infections' I guess that is why they are going to give her vanco at home. i need to talk to someone be sides the hsopitals and infectious disease person. They just say I am making too big a deal out of it. Some Drs. have denied her treatment, no explanation just 'Your appt. has been cancled by the provider' message.

I'm sorry your daughter has been fighting VRE infections. So, she is getting the infections in her lungs? OR, she has OTHER bacteria in her lungs, but she is colonized with VRE? In any case, it is right to be concerned. How do you keep family safe? You are careful about handwashing all around. You keep paper towel, if you can afford it, for drying hands rather than share a common hand towel. You wash your hands after doing any personal care for your daughter. You clean or wash her hands too. Don't share towels or washclothes, and don't use them more than once. Wash her bedding in hot water with bleach. Does she eat yogurt, or have a g-tube? Check with her doctor about probiotics (good bacteria that are also found in yogurt and kefir). Avoid large crowds during flu season...Does your daughter go to school or to a sheltered workshop? You may need to ask the school what they are doing to prevent students from passing viruses/bacteria back and forth. It's OK to talk about this. My little baby granddaughters have been around me and no-one in my family has gotten MRSA. What part of the country are you from? Just wondering, since the majority of cases are in my area.
