Hi,
I just found this group and joined. I became aware of mesothelioma and what a horrendous disease it is after my adult daughter may have been exposed to asbestos after a 1970s building next door to her was taken down without adequate dust control. This causes me a lot of worry and I feel the only thing I can do is work for treatments and a cure. I wanted to make members aware that asbestos is still imported and used in the U.S. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, an estimated 84% of which was used in roofing materials. (http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/commodity/asbestos/mcs-2008-asbes.pdf) Also, the U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill H.R. 6903 The Bruce Vento Ban Asbestos and Prevent Mesothelioma Act to ban the future importation and use of asbestos (it is already banned in 40 countries) and provide funding for medical research into effective treatments for asbestos-related diseases. Please contact your congressional leaders and ask them to support this bill and tell everyone else you know to do the same. You can write your congressional leader from his/her website at According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, an estimated 84% of which was used in roofing materials. You can write your representative from https://writerep.house.gov/writere... and tell him/her to support the bill and why it is important to you that he/she do that. If you have a new representative in Congress, please also write that person. Faye Posted on 12/06/08, 01:12 pm |
