I have a 9 year old son who has development delays, anxiety and mood disorder and scored a low iq on his iep. I can handle almost everything except his mood swings are getting out of hand and he's developing a serious anger problem. He shuts down and there is no compromise at all. He puts a wall up and lashes out in anger saying hateful things. We first thought he was bipolar but his therapist noticed some underlying problems and ordered the iep through the school system and that is when we found that his development was on the level of a 4-5 year old. So now we're back to square 1 and I don't know how to handle this temper of his. I can't get through to him, he argues about everything. We can say it's blue, he'll say it's red. He's so particular. Does anyone know how to deal with this? He is on a mood medication right now but it's having adverse effects so I'm calling his doctor to discuss that problem. I'm also looking for a good developmentalist/genetic doctor in Kentucky. I'd love to hear from anyone that might be going through the same thing and can give me any advice. I'm desperate for help.

" Hello,
I apologize, have no advice just couldnt help but notice how early your post was and I too was up the same time. I feel for you I have similar troubles with my 5 year old although he is non verbal so his outburst are more tantrums. I have never written on a forum but sincerely hope that you find some relief and help. Stay strong and try to get some sleep when you can. Have you considered food allergies? "

" My adopted daughter is almost 13 and like this, she was exposed to alcohol prenatally and has FAS. She only reads second grade level, prints, and comprehension and math concepts often lesss than that. Social/ Emotionally 50% her chronological age. After she was 7 it was clearly not "delay" that she would catch up... as she has prenatal brain injury so she is labeled developmentally disabled and gets some free Respite(childcare) from the Regional Center.

Impulsive behaviors, explosive meldowns are common w/ neurologically different kids. Some do better w/out milk and other dairy. We use soy & rice milk, yogurt & cheese. Some don't eat wheat or any gluten grains like the GF/CF diet used for autism behaviors. I would definately avoid processed food first; all artificial colors, art. sweeteners, corn syrup. art. flavors, preservatives. Homecooked fresh and organic as much as possible, low sugar and use Whole grains like brown rice.
Protein at breakfast maintains blood sugar.

Many use EFA's... fish oil suplements, even for Bipolar. There are also amino acids like L-Theanine that help w/ calmness and safe.
Choline is a B vitamin and is in soy lethithin, eggs & peanuts and helps brain communication. it comes in pills as well. Find a Dr who knows about nutritional supplements. A DAN Autism Dr does, if you have those in your area. Some of the autism therapies like SCERTS(Google- has to do w/ emotional regulation and developing communication) may help. OT, sunlight, trampoline, exercise and deep breathing all help. Sometimes spinning or tickling just before meltdown can prevent or shorten. My girl does better without threats and harshness. the stress and anxiety actually make her act psychotic. I homeschool through a charter. school, we have an IEP so have it w/ homeschool too. "
