Hi ..I am new here. I am not sure that I am in the right group. I have been on Premarin for about 18 years. I want to get off it. I have been slowly decreasing the frequency that I take it and plan to be off it by New Year's Eve. Is there anyone here who has quit taking it after being on it for years?
If so - I would like to know what the withdrawal symptoms are like and what to expect. I don't want to end up divorced!! If I am in the wrong group - please direct me to another one. Thanks! Posted on 11/05/09, 11:11 pm |

Hi...I am shocked to read you have been on Premarin for 18yrs. How old were you when you started on Premarin? Why did your Dr. put you on it? Were you having peri-menopausal symptoms or did you have a complete hysterectomy at a very young age? Complete meaning, removal of both ovaries in addition to the remfoval of the uterus. The answers to these questions have a lot to do with how you may feel going off of the premarin. You do need to wean yourself off of the premarin but how you do this all depends on the dose you have been on. Generally you slowly lower the dose every week. Once you stop taking the premarin it can take up to a few months for your body to deplete it. Your present age and the answers to the other questions may have a lot to do with how you will feel once you are off of the premarin. I sure hope you have been having regular female exams and mammograms. Taking the premarin puts you at a higher risk for breast cancer. Premarin is a type of estrogen made out of the urine of very young female horses. Estrogen is "the food" which feeds breast cancer cells. I am not a doctor. I am a very well educated woman who has had breast cancer when I was 34yrs. old, sixteen years ago. I have been in menopause for ten years. I hope this information is helpful to you.
I hope you find this information helpful to you.

Hello - Thanks for your reply. I did have a complete hysterectomy at age 45. I am taking .3mg. I do have regular mammograms....and female exams. I heard from a nurse one time that her grandmother went off of it and was "crazy" for two weeks... So I am timing it so I go off of it at the start of my Christmas vacation (which is for two weeks).
Just wondering what I am in for (and my husband)....

First of all, you need to ask a competent gynecologist how to stop taking this product. Don't just try to do it by yourself. If not done correctly you will possibly feel some menopausal symptoms which could be very unpleasant. I personally have not ever been involved with it though I have an 88 year old friend that still takes the stuff. I don't think that it is prescribed too much anymore, mostly because of the pregnant horse issue and people being more conscious of the source.
Definitely talk to an expert before you do anything. Your body is accustomed to this drug. Good luck!
