I am 55 and I can tell you that the first time in my life that I truly experienced anxiety was around the time of menopause. An interesting thought is that recently I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and when I started the medications I noticed a distinct drop in episodes of anxiety. Have your blood levels checked by an endocrinologist if possible. Try to find a woman dr. at least your age! I take bio identical hormones and would not be without them, having started this program at about 46. I tried all of the 'natural' items, such as black cohosh, soy, etc. prior to this but could not find relief.
good luck to you,
JK

Antidepressants at 42! I have G.A,D anyway, generalized anxiety disorder....more like EGADS now! ha. I swear I felt shell shocked over...life. And those dark days were not a ray of sunshine either. When I went to my doc who has the bedside manner of a post, he said,"Soooo, (in his old geezer whiny voice) what is the prooooooblem.?" I just looked at his cataracts (kidding) and said, "I feel like a loon. Gimme something". So, the rest is history.....

good advice to get a good doctor on board - although my OBGYN is a woman and delivered my child, she has no bedside manner and offered zero solutions for my complaints (other than how to get my periods under control through taking birth control again). I've had to go out & look for answers on my own - and that's not working so well !!! EGADS indeed! will check out the endocrinologist angle too... awesome ideas...

I go to a clinic for the uninsured, the nurse practitioner there dismissed my symptoms too, so I am on my own taking vitamins and such. The nervous anxiety I feel gets out of hand sometimes, and I find myself taking tylenol p.m.'s during the day just to calm down enough to think! This is all crazy, and I can't wait for it all to pass! Reading these posts on here REALLY helps to not feel alone!

I know the overwhelming feeling of anxiety oh to well!!! I also take a handful of vitamins daily. From what i have read is that magnesium is great for treating anxiety. I take a calcium/magnesium vita 3 times a day. Which comes to 3000mg of calcium and 1200mg of magnesium. Ask your dr what dose would be good for you. A brisk walk for 30 or more minutes a day, also is a great stress buster. Good luck:)

Calcium and magnesium is essential. Also, take vitamin B50's. It's amazing what that can do for you. I take valerian root sometimes. My sister in law swears by Don Quai. Rlaxation exercises helps as well. I have a severe anxiety disorder so I take antidepressants as well.

I have been taking the vitamins for quite awhile now, can't tell they are doing any good. Exercise used to help, but not as much anymore. Things just seem to spiral out of control a couple of weeks out of every month. Maybe I can check into Don Quai and valerian root. 8 yrs. of this is overwhelming,I just keep telling myself this too shall pass. The best to all!

I agree. I'm 56 and these last two years have been the worst. I might try bio identical hormones again. The anxiety is the worst thing about menopause. I never knew this would happen, I wonder how long this lasts. I remember my mom saying she sailed right through menopause without any problems! I wish I would have asked her more about it when she was still alive.
I have read that thinner women have a harder time with menopause because they don't have as much estrogen in their fat cells. Anyone ever heard of this?
