Am I having Hot Flashes?

I'm 45 years old now, and have had this "sweating" problem for about 5 to 7 years. When I asked my doctor about it, he just blew me off. Whenever I eat or drink something, warm or hot, my entire body (including my toe nails :->) breaks out in a horrible sweat. When I get out of the shower, I sweat for one to two hours.
It's so bad, I can't blow dry my hair; wear cologne; wear make-up, sunscreen or lotion. I definately had to give up wearing white. I almost got into a car crash once because my hand was so wet it slipped off the steering wheel. Recently, I went to Wal-Mart and sweat non-stop for the two hours I was there. I was so embarrased! I felt like I had to apologize, to every person staring at me, or make an excuse for the sweat dripping off my chin. I just wanted to crawl into a hole! My clothes were soaked, my hair was drenched and I couldn't wipe the sweat from my face fast enough. I hate to go out! Sorry this is so long. Has anyone had this or should I assume it's not menopause/ hot flashes? Thank you so much! Posted on 10/27/09, 01:10 am |

In the past I only had hot flashes at night; the entire week before my period, and a day or two into it. Recently I have has episodes randomly or after a shower. I wonder if I am heading down your "road" next?! My oldest daughter has panic attacks and sweats profusly like you are describing. I don't have any advise, just know you are not alone!

Thank you for your advice SophieT. It has been brought up that possibly anxiety could be causing it. I don't know. I thought prehaps someone had hot flashes the way I described. Hopefully, others will comment as well.
P.S. I'm not overweight and I am taking Black Cohosh.

Hi Cat! Love your pic by the way! Too cute!
Recently, I too have been having these "sweat outbreaks" and I don;t think they are really a hot flash, at least not for me. I do get hot flashes ( they started last year in Nov/Dec when I first started missing periods). They too are horrible and I tried Black Cohosh, but can not recall if that worked. I also seemed to come out of the menopause phase until recently. Now I do get these sweats that come out of nowhere...mostly my head it seems..just pours sweat! I was actually sitting at a medical center doing paperwork to see an endocrinologist and sweat was pouring out of me! I asked the other people in the room if it was hot in there and they said yes but they weren't sweating! It is like my entire body temp can not stay regulated. Now this has been an issue for the last 2 years ( when I started steroids for a diff health problem and then became Adrenally Insufficient as a result so am having to cope with that now). But I will get cold in 80 degrees or then be hot...like I can not regulate myself. It is very frustrating...and I have a feeling my air conditioner is gonna be used this winter! Hormones suck! GRR BUT you are NOT alone!!!

Hi Cat,
I don't have sweating episodes really except for after a hot shower for awhile, but hope that you are doing better and having your fears laid to rest.... Hope that you have many more responses on here as well... It sounds horrible what you are going through!? I am having face burning issues rather than sweats, so not sure whats happening for myself really.... I suppose we all have different ways of showing menopause individually.... in varying ways I suppose..... lol? Sharon

My hot flashes get so bad, I often look like a druggie in need of crack! My doc has the bedside manner of a rock and says I will have to deal with it like millions of other women do everyday. I say to him, (silently, of course)"Bite me!". Why I don't change docs? Because I have no insurance and he's $40. an office visit. ha.

Hi Catkrzy
I have been having hot flushes for 3 years now. Not as bad as yours but red face, dripping body etc about 30 times a day. I got the doctor to give me a blood test which told him that I was in the Menopause. I took a combined tincture of Agnus Castus, Fennel and Feverfew, 5mls twice a day. It worked for two years till my body got used to it. I am now on a combination from a registerd herbalist of 7 things including Black Cohosh. Trouble is it doesnt work as well as the Agnus blend, but it makes me sweat less. Doesn't seem to stop the snarling and growling a certain times of the month!! But don't know which ones are for menopause cause he's giving me some help with my RA as well. I am on steroids for the RA and came on to this site by mistake looking for side effects of Black Cohosh as I am growing fluffy sideburns with rabbit like hair. Hope this helps.

Hi Cat, I'm so glad you brought this up. I'm sorry I can't be more positive or short in my reply. I sweat just like you do and in my local Wal Mart, restaurants, etc., because they are keeping the A/C off to save money, I've asked the Managers, but also dripping wet, and embarrased because the heat makes it worse or triggers the hot flashes. I tried all OTC products including natural ones that eventually stopped working. I've been suffering from this since I was in my early 40s. None of my doctors would diagnose because I was too young and not surgically induced. Finally, after counting my hot and cold flashes and showing a gyn on paper this was happening 8 times per hour everyday and night, how exhausting this all was for me, and hindered my work performance, and people were noticing the sweat pouring off of my forehead, face and upperlip, as if I had run a mile, and finally flat on my back in bed unable to get up, did they do a blood test and yes, "surpise", I'm in menopause. I've been off my hormones for 3 mos. because my Primary dr. told me that they were not going to prescribe my hormones because of my high cholesterol, risks of heart attack and stroke, I've been sweating as if I have hyperhydrosis. Which my son is diagnosed with. I sweat just like you are talking about when doing anything: digesting food, getting dressed, sitting, sleeping, talking, doing absolutely nothing. It's like having a fever and chills, from hot to cold, constantly putting on a coat and then ripping it off all day and all night. I'm back on my hormones, despite the warnings, because I just can't function. Hopefully they will kick in soon. I have no energy and flat on my back in bed. I just turned 50 with no job, or mate to depend on, so, I'm not sure if I'm having increased hot flashes due to menopause or flat out panic attacks, because I know it's only me to count on, and can't even do that right now the way my body is acting. I know my mother had surgically induced menopause and went through all the same severe symptoms in her 40's. She basically became homebound. I just wish more people including my physicians had more sympathy, or empathy, and would take the debilitating symptoms I am having more seriously. I can't seem to find anyone to take me seriously! It's ruining my quality of life. I've recently had a blood test in which my gyn is taking their time getting lab results to me, to see if I need an increased dose or another type of hormone. This was all done last week and still waiting. Thank you all for letting me vent, and your understaning would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for bringing up this topic for discussion. Belle1
