Recurring Meningitis

I was seriously ill with Meningitis in the '60's and it seems every now and then I get another bout of it, though not as bad as that first time. Perhaps I've been under a misimpression that once gone, it only comes back if infected again. Maybe it's like the cold sore virus and hangs around until your system is compromised. Any ideas?

" I too have had recurring aseptic meningitis. six times. I have been through the all tests and there has been nothing found. But the only correlation I do have is that I am a smoker, and each time I quit, I end up with another bout of aseptic meningitis. The neuros have said that my body is actually fighting itself after the nicotene is out of my system... But they are not even sure of this. After one misdiagnosis and two bouts in 98, I got it again in 2002. I have actually stayed in the hospital for extended times hoping something would be found. I can only tell you that in all my years since the first time I contracted this in 1987, I feel that I am not alone in this. I believe each of us has to live our best life each day. The pain may be there tomorrow, so I always try to make the most of it daily. "I'm just glad to be here!" Thinking of going through another bout because I am thinking of quitting smoking again. And this is very scary. "

" im sitting here with my 6th or 7th meningitis bout, and i admit only went to the hospital the first time 10 or so years ago and was diagnosed with viral meningitis. Reading today online it seems the cause of the recurrence is herpes 2, a cyst ,or HIV. the latter of which to me also implies any kind of compromised immune system that allows the virus to take hold again. This is what it seems to me after serious alcohol binges- i usually have an attack. Like the smoker above, i think alot of our health comes from things our body is used to, and keeping the immune system healthy- which is different for everyone, as
it's also tied into stress and mental health.
So Good Luck to everyone with this i think its possible to keep it away. "

" The most recent time I had it again was last year after getting a tick bite that swelled into the "textbook" bullseye rash. The rash didn't show up until I suffered with intense headache, stiff spinal cord and neck and feeling like I had the flu and meningitis for about a week.

But it has shown up every couple of years when I am especially run down. "

" I have this right now and I really need support and maybe some answers. I started with a stiff neck about 2 weeks before i got a fever. It was the worst neck pain I have ever had and I have had whiplash before, so this was bad. Then the Wednesday BEFORE last I got a fever of 103 and that last about 4 days. Went down to 101 for a few and then a grace period of constant 99. I had pain in my knees on Monday of last week that got worse and went to my left. They did no tests on that knee except for an Xray. I was in the ER and they could not figure what was wrong and tried even testing me for some crazy STDS. They did not test for meningitis. I even suggested the idea to them. What do I do? I have been to my primary care physician. I am supposed to graduate in 3 weeks and I haven't been able to attend school. These are the symptoms I have now:
VERTIGO really bad
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (very high for me)
PAIN in KNEES
EYES cant FOCUS
RINGING IN EARS
CONFUSION AND FORGETFULNESS
PANIC

I feel horrible! They have given me no antibiotic but my white blood cell count is high (13) - not terrible - but high. Is it possible that I still have bacterial and it was killed mildly by a past antibiotic? I do not feel like myself and it seems that no one has the answers for me other than this is a virus that will go away. I have been sick for about 3 weeks now. Please help!

I guess I had this as a new born baby once, so how did I even get it again?

I am in college but I commute there. No one else is sick with this.
Thank you. "

" Its like how mine started horrid headache, extreme vertigo, and everything else my white blood cell count on my spinal tap was 35,000 I spent 4 weeks in the hospital and monthes out of work. School can always wait your health is of concern u need to go to a big city hospital or call a infectious disease doctor they will be able to help you. You most likely have the viral form like I did or you wouldn't be talking right now it normally clears itself up in 7 to 10 days like the flu mine turned in encephalitis and got so much worse keep a eye on your symptoms take your health serious "

" I've had Bacterial meningitis in 79 and then got viral twice after two surgery's had a doctor tell me I just needed to be really careful and make sure I was on some antibiotic after any major surgery he basically made it sound like what you said though like a cold sore that any irritant could trigger it cause our immune systems have been so compromised "
