I tried it all, nothing worked, but old school doctors don't really care enough to research. For those you do read, it's becoming common knowledge that Meniere's is caused by a viral infection and can be cured in 85%~90% of cases by taking Valtrex 1000mg three times a day or Zovirex 800mg five times a day for 4~6 weeks. These drugs are not even mentioned by most ENTs could lead many a reader to consider drastic, ineffective and irreversible surgical management which is still being pushed bymany lagging doctors. See Sources I have added:

"Effectiveness of Acyclovir on Meniere's Syndrome III Observation of Clinical Symptoms in 301 cases," Mitsuo Shichinohe, M.D., Ph.D., The Sapporo Medical Journal, Vol. 68, No. 4-6, Cases of 301 MD patients treated with antiviral meds The results were: In 82.5% of cases diagnosed as Meniere's Disease, 85% of cases diagnosed as Meniere's Syndrome, and 89.1% of cases diagnosed as vestibular dysfunction, vertigo disappeared, and tinnitus and hearing were improved.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of Massachusetts Medical School,
Morphological and clinical evidence supports a viral neuropathy in Ménière's disease (MD). Quantitative examination with transmission electron microscopy of vestibular ganglion cells excised from a patient with MD revealed viral particles enclosed in transport vesicles. Antiviral treatment controlled vertigo in 32 of 35 patients with MD (91%). PMID: 19142031 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

" And weird that this is brought up just as news about a virus being a potential cause for my other illness. "

" Once I persuaded my ENT to prescribe this, my insurance covered it. I did have to send the studies to him by email before our meeting as he never heard about any of it. "

" I want to know if anyone else has tried this. It is driving me insane. If there is a chance I could get better, go on a long drive without having to worry, not have to call into work for days at a time...not have to anally watch every freaking milligram of food I eat...God I would be so happy.

So please, anyone else tried it or thinking about trying it? "

" I did read that thank you. I was hoping more people had tried it and could share their story. I mean only you and a mother of a son who had it has said it works and then one person who was trying it. I've never heard of this anywhere else so I wont be surprised if my doctor hasn't either and wont write out the script. "

" over 3,000 people have used this drug for this condition with 85% of the cases eliminating vertigo. the Drug is FDA approved and has been around for a long time. I suggest you demand it from your doctor (i could NOT get it from an ENT had to go to a a general doctors, they gives it our for cold sores to basically anyone) and try it for one week, if you don't feel even a little better then you are in the 15% for which it does not work. The longer you wait the more irreversible damage you will have, so i suggest you take action now. Good luck and really hope you feel better soon. "

" I've only had one drop attack and that was at the end of August; I was dxd in September. I'd had NO trouble with any kind of dizzy previous to that attack. Came out of the blue. And unnerved the crap out of us.

I've only had a relapse or two of just dizziness once or twice, sleep dep being one cause and a cave to the craving of Cheese Puffs being the other.

I haven't really been symptomatic since I recovered from the big drop.

Is there a need to be symptomatic a certain percentage of time, or has the drug been given 'preemptively'?

My biggest trigger is not sleeping well, and with my multiple health challenges, I'm already doing what I can for that.

My ENT did mention I might have a virus when he dxd... I'm seeing him again in March 2010, so I guess we'll be seeing if there's any progression. So far it's been all my left ear, with a little bit of new faint ringing in my right ear from time to time.

And with CFS I have to be very careful what I try, as it can send my body chemistry really out of whack. "

" The drug both helps to eliminate symptoms and to prevent them from reoccurring. As with all other Viral medication it does not KILL the virus just suppresses. I am still taking it months after i have not had a vertigo attack, its helping my hearing to return which is reducing my tinnitus. "

" Thank you for all the info and your input.

I don't have hearing loss yet either, other than what can come with age and a 'noisy' youth and job. I've always had a brain filtering problem with sound, I can be in a restaurant and unless I really foc us, I can here sounds across the room as loudly as the sounds next to me.

I'll be bringing this up with my doctors the next time I see them

Thanks again for all the info. "
