The Ignore Feature

I really feel that the ignore feature should be made better. I would love to see it made to work as it is in other sites I belong to. The way it is set up here now, simply does not help much.
In other places I visit, if a person is on ignore, they can not reply on any of your topics, and by such cause damage to a serious asking for help thread. Also, if they make a reply, or if they even make a post, they appear totally invisible, and are not in my sight. As things are here, if they make a post, I can still see it on the board and click and read it. When one sees they have responded to one of your own posts, it is often to easy and too tempting to make them unignored, in order to see what they have written, which in my and many other peoples cases can be very damaging. Is it possible to see an upgrade soon that would eliminate my having to see the often hurtful posts that some I have on ignore have put up? I think an upgrade to the ignore feature such as this would prove beneficial to all in the long run. Just my opinion. Posted on 10/27/09, 12:10 pm |

Im fully with this.
Someone has me on ignore. I wonder what Ive done but as I dont know who it is, Im not sure i should care too much. A full ignore feature would be a good thing

I agree the function should more fully 'ignore'. Don't count on a change to it though.
Can't hurt to put this original post into a feedback form .. but know DS has probably heard it before.

I think this is a good idea too. I don't think DS is gonna go with it though. I don't normally bash DS, but they don't seem to upgrade anything important or get back to us as often as we'd like. They've said DS can only do so much on this site, yet other sites have managed to take the next step in security, chat, ignore and things like that. They should really up the ante a bit. But yeah, this is definitely a good and very important idea.

Be lucky your ignore feature works. Mine doesn't. I have emailed DS three times asking them to fix it. What reponse do I get? They tell me how it works (I KNOW how it works, and mine doesn't work)! Then they ask me if I'm a member of the group I'm complaining about with the nasty posts from a member I'm trying to ignore. Well of course I'm a member of that group and I told them that!
I can't believe their response is to tell me how ignore works, and then ask if I'm a member of the group?

Shevan this happens so many times with many problems. For ages I had problems with even getting access to the original DS chat (great feature BTW) and got the same sort of response and in the end gave up.
I am not sure if my ignore is working or not as the people I have on ignore are not in contact and I do not know if that is because they aren't trying or that they have been turned away and not getting through. BTW they are on private ignore only so unless they send me something - and I knew it was sent - I would not know

I think this would run counter to the environment DS has created. It is one thing to use the ignore feature as a barrier to keep people of your choosing from sending things to you. This is kind of like using caller ID to screen your calls.
This proposal would effectively become censorship on the open boards!

Then why not run a 2 month trial on this and see how everyone likes it? If not enough members like it, they can go back the the old ways and/or find ways to fix the flaws of the trial. If people DO like it, they can keep it on here and run it.

How would it be censorship Pepper? How is my not wanting to see someones comments censorship? There will still be people who can see their posts if they wish to. It would just be me, and others possibly, exercising our right to not have to see and read their comments, or have to deal with the results of any comments they may make on our posts.
Most communities I belong to already have that feature in their ignore tab. No one that I have ever heard from in those communities, has ever minded it. As a matter of fact, they love it. Think of it as the same as you allowing or not allowing certain people into your home. You do it to protect yourself. This is much the same. This allows for people to keep those who they are insecure with, from having access to your thoughts and feelings... After all... they would still be perfectly able to post any thoughts they have themselves in their own posts, and have others read them... This way, they that I ignore, do not have to post in mine... or even see my post.

Why does the ignore feature let the ignored know that they are being ignored? This will only piss them off worse! I do not understand why people start "flame wars" and disrespect people who are obviously on here for support. DS admin should be quick to ban people like that. DS should feel safe for everyone. Bullies suck!

The comparison to face book seems a bit skewed to me, although I admit that I am not very experienced in face book just yet. I do not see the parallel between the boards at DS and our individual walls on face book. To me a more accurate comparison is between the face book wall and our: hugs, journals, photos and goals. I think it is proper that we be able to select who can and cannot be part of our hugs, journals, photos and goals.
The proposal to restrict people from part of the main discussion boards (responding to postings based on the OP's ignore list) seems just that; censorship: the OP would get to decide who can and can not reply to their post. I can understand not wanting to let somebody one has a long standing disagreement with comment on a public posting of a very personal problem, but the same rules would apply to the mundane and humorous things that go to these boards.
